[Libvir] libvirt & vde_switch

In reply to http://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2007-April/msg00177.html an area where vde_switch support is usefull is an unprivileged user running tests. A test suite involving the creation of qemu instances thru libvirt should not be forced to create a bridge or alter the iptables configuration. With vde_switch and slirpvde multiple qemu instances can be run without altering the network configuration of the host. I hope it helps. Cheers

[Libvir] mark some diagnostics for translation

This makes it so some diagnostics emitted via the error function are checked for use of "_(...)" when you run "make syntax-check", and fixes the ones that lacked that: Enable the sc_unmarked_diagnostics test and correct all violations involving the "error" function. * Makefile.cfg (local-checks-to-skip): Remove from skip list. Then, at the end, a second patch: Mark a string for translation. * src/virsh.c: Add a "%s" and wrap with _(...). Note that technically, it doesn't make sense to translate a diagnostic like this (there are several like this): error (conn, VIR_ERR_RPC, _("maxids > REMOTE_DOMAIN_ID_LIST_MAX")); However, if it's worth emitting the diagnostic, then I think it's worth making it a little more useful to someone not reading the code, e.g., too many domains (maximum is %d) If no one objects, I'll convert the ones below. [Libvir] mark more translatable messages

This change marks for translation some more messages. It adds a few new ones, too, e.g., replacing "domain" with _("failed to parse domain description") in two places. Likewise, there are some like this: - virXendError (conn, VIR_ERR_NO_MEMORY, "strdup"); + virXendError (conn, VIR_ERR_NO_MEMORY, _("strdup failed")); The two new grep invocations in Makefile.maint handle two situations: First, when the entire statement is on a single line (ends in ";"). The second grep (with -A1) is to get the diagnostics that appear on the line following the function name. Hence where the first line ends in ",". With checks like this, it's nice if you can assume no trailing blanks in the code base. IMHO, that would be a nice change to make soon, but it's more invasive. I have an old HVM guest defined in 3.0.4, and now I'm running 3.1.2 and libvirt 0.4.0. Now that I've added the vc-list-files script to gnulib, this patch makes libvirt's bootstrap pull it from there. Changes from the previous version of the script: I reintroduced support for mercurial (only lightly tested), and rearranged the directory-existence tests so git is first. On Solaris-based xen 3.1.2 I am seeing virDomainGetInfo() often returning VIR_DOMAIN_NOSTATE in dominfo.state for domUs that are powered on and running. What exactly does VIR_DOMAIN_NOSTATE mean? Why does it exist? I suspect it is a catch-all in the API for hosts that don't entirely have their act together, that do not always return a valid guest state. Is that the case? This patch fixes the flaws and adds a comprehensive test program to validate it. The test program also validates invalid cases. NB, this code is actually now more perfect than Xen, since Xen doesn't handle SCSI disks > sdp, even though you can go all the way to sdhv. The rules are: * hdNM: N=a-t, M=1-63, major={IDE0_MAJOR -> IDE9_MAJOR} * sdNM: N=a-z,aa-hw, M=1-15, major={SCSI_DISK0_MAJOR -> SCSI_DISK15_MAJOR} * xvdNM: N=a-p, M=1-15, major=XENVBD_MAJOR Which translates to the formulas xvdNM: (XENVBD_MAJOR * 256) + (disk * 16) + part; sdNM: (majors[disk/16] * 256) + ((disk%16) * 16) + part hdNM: (majors[disk/2] * 256) + ((disk % 2) * 63) + part; The SCSI/IDE formulas lookup the major number in a table since they are allocated non-contigously. [Libvir] update after changing XML

Hi, I changed some of the XML for a qemu virtual machine. The original file was generated by virt-manager, but I wanted to use bridged networking as described in the documentation on the libvirt website. Is there something I need to for my xml changes to show up in the virtual machine? Hi, attached patch drops the assumption that a non-root user has read access to the guest OSes partition - he doesn't need to since all interaction is handled via libvirt and giving the user read access for a simple MBR block read test seems like overkill. Please apply if appropriate, patch is against current hg. [Libvir] [PATCH] Avoid link errors with "configure --disable-shared".

I tried to build static binaries in the usual libtool way, via "configure --disable-shared" and got some link errors due to the tests linking only with shared-lib-related files. Add framework for code style- and syntax-checking rules. Almost all tests are initially disabled via the list in Makefile.cfg. * Makefile.am (EXTRA_DIST): Add .x-sc_avoid_if_before_free. A few days ago I wrote a patch eliminating all of the useless if tests of the form "if (foo) free (foo);". In general, when making such a global change, I prefer to add a check so that it is easy to ensure mechanically that the new violations don't sneak back in. So I wrote a script to detect the above, then another to perform the "remove-if-cond" part as a double check against my detect-and-manually-remove work. Once you can mechanically detect the offending pattern, it's good to make it as easy as possible to check for recurrence. In other projects, I've used "make syntax-check", because most such tests are syntax-related and detectable using tools like grep. The first patch simply removes the useless if tests. Following it, I introduce a "make syntax-check" framework similar to what I use in coreutils. In it, most tests are disabled, except the new one that tests for the unnecessary "if"-before-free. In the following 6 patches, I enable new tests one by one, and correct the violations each one exposes. I deliberately keep these tests in a separate Makefile.maint file, and pull them in via GNUmakefile so that they are not subject to the burdensome portability constraints associated with regular Makefile.am contents. I.e., if you run "make syntax-check", you are expected to have GNU make as well as a reasonable set of working tools. Thus, we don't have to worry about whether egrep works or whether e.g., perl is present. Jim

Sorry for late reply, I was on holiday yesterday. For the build error, looks like a regression because of some recently added / updated code. I'll have to boot up my Windows machine and take a look. Versions of the packages used: MinGW & MSYS "candidate" versions (specifically, gcc 4 is required) GnuTLS 1.6.3 (binary for Windows on their site) Make sure you install it in a location _without_ a space in the path (ie. not the default). You have to hack the *.la files to correct the hard-coded paths. libxml2 2.6.30 (I compiled from source, but there are also binaries available) My PortableXDR library. You should be able to use the binaries from that location. Within the installer you'll find a 'libvirt.dll' + all the *.dll that it requires. Supposedly this DLL will work on MS VC++, but obviously I haven't tested this. The thing to do is to try it. Hi, I've a number of servers running XEN and am trying to write some code to monitor them through libvirt. (Xeon/Dual Core/Ubuntu Gutsy/Xen 3.1) All was going well until I got to virDomainBlockStats and it simply refused to accept my coding .. Mmm, Ok .. I've pretty much spent the last week getting Xen 3.2 to function "properly" built entirely from raw XEN sources using Xen's documentation. AIO is still a flakey as hell, one time through the loop and the instance seems to work, second time around it won't start and neither will anything else. I have file: based instances running just fine .. my guess is the unload problem is still there, but the kernel logging is gone and they've created a critical system lock-up in it's place. Is there any documentation to the effect that "file" is bad?? The official XEN documentation lists "file" as the standard and makes no mention of "aio". Currently I'm mounting my image on gluster filesystems and I'm getting 70Mb/sec so I'm not unhappy with the performance, and I've had no issues recently with crashes. ... more information would be useful if you have it. Hi, I'm still unable to build (see output files attached). This is from the sources I downloaded from ftp://libvirt.org/libvirt/libvirt-cvs-snapshot.tar.gz When running configure I get a popup error message that libconf-2.dll is missing. Looking at MinGW site, I found version 1.11 of libconv. Do I have to use a later version? If yes where can I find it. I'm having problem understanding which libraries and versions I should use for the compilation. Do you have a more detailed list of packages to install in MinGW. If you can send me this lis, I'll start from the beginning using a new (clean) XP installation. Can I just use the binaries compiled in https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2008-January/msg00072.html ? [Libvir] A sample program to create a Linux Container

Attached is a simple program that uses the clone() function to create a container. This is not intended as a patch - just an example of what creating a Linux Container looks like. Something along these lines will be used by the Linux Container driver to start the domain. The code run within this container is really simple. It just mounts the /proc file system and then dumps the ps output to a file showing that the container is in separate process space. To run this you will need to have PID namespaces support enabled. Turn on CONFIG_PID_NS when compiling the kernel. You must run the program as root or the clone() call will fail. Any questions or comments are welcome. There's a couple of odd things about this. In Gnulib's getaddrinfo.h we have: #ifdef HAVE_NETDB_H # include <netdb.h> #endif But I think you're including some other <getaddrinfo.h> from somewhere else. My version of MinGW doesn't have any file called getaddrinfo.h (which is why we're using the one from Gnulib in the first place), so I suspect either you're using some later version of MinGW or else you've got MinGW & Cygwin files mixed up, or you've got some other implementation of getaddrinfo installed. Secondly: ../qemud/remote_protocol.h:509: error: expected specifier-qualifier-list before 'u_int64_t' In this file from CVS, line 509 is: typedef struct remote_domain_get_max_vcpus_args remote_domain_get_max_vcpus_args; and I don't see how this line can provoke the error. You'll need to use the versions of qemud/remote_protocol.[ch] from CVS, along with PortableXDR (see yesterday's posting) or my hacked up xdr-4.0-mingw5 library. Hi, Did anybody managed to compile libvirt-0.4.0 on windows. I tried following instructions on http://libvirt.org/windows.html which offer compiling in Cygwin. This doesn't work because of inconsistency with winsock2. Hello, I created a guest from XML without a <bootloader> tag. When I run dumpxml on the guest, I notice that an empty <bootloader /> tag is appended. Is this the expected behavior? This seems to differ from the behavior of other optional tags. Thanks! [Libvir] PATCH: Remove use of PKG_CHECK_EXISTS

This patch removes the use of PKG_CHECK_EXISTS which is only available in new versions of pkg-config. Instead we use the 3rd and 4th args of the PKG_CHECK_MODULES macro to control the if-found/not-found behaviour. This allows us to auto-disable features if they're missing, rather than aborting the configure run. This patch also updates the SASL tests to support the value 'check' for auto-enable/disable like the rest of the modules. I got a little bit further with this, my current patch is attached. At the moment, it gets as far as building libvirt & virsh, but fails to build the Python bindings. However virsh doesn't run, apparently because of a simple dynamic linking problem because of where the libraries are (not yet) installed. I'm afraid that my understanding of how to build and install applications on Mac OS X ends around here. In particular I have no idea how to get the detailed abort trace that Andrew showed up in his previous email. References to portablexdr will be explained in a forthcoming email.
