If no uri is passed to one of the virConnectOpen-ish calls, libvirt attempts to autoprobe a sensible URI. Part of the current logic checks for getuid() > 0, and if that check is succesful, a libvirtd daemon is spawned. This patch replaces this check with a call to access(LIBVIRTD_PRIV_UNIX_SOCKET, W_OK) so that users with access to the qemu:///system UNIX socket connect to that one by default instead of spawning a new libvirtd daemon. VirtualDisks are .vmdk file based. On mingw, libvirt is typically configured --without-libvirtd, because the mingw build is designed to target other hosts, but cannot natively run as a hypervisor. Additionally, mingw doesn't really have a notion of /etc/sysconf, so installing /etc/sysconfig/libvirt-guests doesn't work too well. Should tools/Makefile.am make the build and installation of libvirt-guests dependent on the already-existing WITH_LIBVIRTD Makefile conditional, or would it ever make sense to build libvirt-guests but not libvirtd? I guess the answer to that boils down to whether it ever makes sense to use libvirt-guests on a system that is not running libvirtd, in which case it would only be able to control remote URIs. But the whole point of the script is to cleanly save state for local VMs, so I don't see using libvirt-guests as a management tool for remote URIs. Gcc didn't catch this under '-g -O0', but with -Werror and -O2, it dies with a warning that rc is used uninitialized. I suspect that clang would have also reported this, although I haven't tested that suspicion. Instead of splitting the path part of a datastore path into directory and file name, keep this in one piece. An example: "[datastore] directory/file" was split into this before: datastoreName = "datastore" directoryName = "directory" fileName = "file" Now it's split into this: datastoreName = "datastore" directoryName = "directory" directoryAndFileName = "directory/file" This simplifies code using esxUtil_ParseDatastorePath, because directoryAndFileName is used more often than fileName. Also the old approach expected the datastore path to reference a actual file, but this isn't always correct, especially when listing volume. In that case esxUtil_ParseDatastorePath is used to parse a path that references a directory. This fails for a vpx:// connection because the vCenter returns directory paths with a trailing '/'. The new approach is robust against this and the actual decision if the datastore path should reference a file or a directory is up to the caller of esxUtil_ParseDatastorePath. I don't think all snprintf uses are bad - those that format a number into an appropriately-sized maximum-possible array should be fine. For example, there are some fixed-size buffers whose size is determined by the kernel, where snprintf was the appropriate course of action in nwfilter_ebiptables_driver.c. But sprintf doesn't have quite the coverage as snprintf, so this continuation of *printf cleanups converts some of these. I still have more patches to go, but this has taken me long enough to get some more review rather than slamming a 20-patch series all at the end. More comments within individual patches. The current code will go into an infinite loop if the printf generated string is >= 1000, AND exactly 1 character smaller than the amount of free space in the buffer. When this happens, we are dropped into the loop body, but nothing will actually change, because count == (buf->size - buf->use - 1), and virBufferGrow returns unchanged if count < (buf->size - buf->use) Fix this by removing the '- 1' bit from 'size'. The *nprintf functions handle the NULL byte for us anyways, so we shouldn't need to manually accomodate for it. So it's already September and while back from vacations I didn't yet fully scan all the list for potential patches. Still I'm tempted to try to get a release by the 10 which mean we would enter the freeze this week-end. I guess it would be 0.8.4 since there is no huge feature or change commited since 0.8.3. Is there anything important shich should land before the next release and that I may have overlooked ? There is also a number of patches which were sent but not ACK'ed or pushed but since I didn't finished the full list, I don't know yet if they got reposted, I will try to finish the scan tomorrow. Hi, all I encounter this problem when I try to send NMI to guest. I don't know how. I think if I can access to the qemu-monitor, I can just do this command in the qemu-monitor: "nmi <cpu#>". But I don't know how to access to qemu-monitor, I think I can get help here. I noticed that the guest is started by libvirt with these parameters: -chardev socket,id=monitor,path=/var/lib/libvirt/qemu/vm~laijs.monitor,server,nowait \ -mon chardev=monitor,mode=control So I wrote a simple program and tried to access qemu-monitor by accessing the socket /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/vm~laijs.monitor. It failed, because I don't know how to send commands with "mode=control", I don't know the protocol for exchanging data with this file. (If I start guest with the same parameters as libvirt but using "mode=readline", I successfully sent commands to qemu-monitor by my simple program, I just send text commands) I noticed that libvirt 0.8.3 supports remote protocol and arbitrary qemu commands, but I did not found any document, how can I use it? uml_dir overrides user-mode-linux's default of ~/.uml. This is needed for a couple of different reasons: libvirt expects this to default to virGetUserDirectory(geteuid()) + '/.uml'. However, user-mode-linux actually uses the HOME environment variable to determine where to look for the uml sockets, but if running libvirtd under sudo (which I routinely do during development), $HOME is pointing at my user's homedir, while my euid is 0, so libvirt looks in /root. Also (and this was my actual motivation for this patch), if HOME isn't set at all, user-mode-linux utterly fails. Looking at the code, it seems it's meant to emit a warning, but alas, it doesn't for some reason. If running libvirtd from upstart, HOME is not set, so any system using upstart will need this change. Subject: [RFC] Memory controller exploitation in libvirt Memory CGroup is a kernel feature that can be exploited effectively in the current libvirt/qemu driver. Here is a shot at that. At present, QEmu uses memory ballooning feature, where the memory can be inflated/deflated as and when needed, co-operatively between the host and the guest. There should be some mechanism where the host can have more control over the guests memory usage. Memory CGroup provides features such as hard-limit and soft-limit for memory, and hard-limit for swap area. Design 1: Provide new API and XML changes for resource management ================================================================= All the memory controller tunables are not supported with the current abstractions provided by the libvirt API. libvirt works on various OS. This new API will support GNU/Linux initially and as and when other platforms starts supporting memory tunables, the interface could be enabled for them. [libvirt] how to print size_t in LGPLv2+ program

libvirt is currently LGPLv2+, but needs to use the printf family of functions to display size_t values, even on mingw where %zu support is not built in. My understanding is that on 64-bit windows, sizeof(long)==4 but sizeof(void*)==8; and if I'm reading http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/s3f49ktz%28VS.80%29.aspx correctly, then sizeof(size_t) is also 8. Which means you _can't_ use "%lu",(unsigned long)size_t_val. And mingw also lacks support for "%llu",(unsigned long long)size_t_val. So that leaves several options: Is it worth relaxing the license on the *printf-posix family of modules to LGPLv2+ from their current LGPLv3+, or is this too big of a request? Ultimately, this is the nicest - %zu would just work. Is it worth relaxing the license of the inttostr family of modules?. But that is also LGPLv3+, and requires a more careful audit to convert all uses of "%zu",size_t_val into "%s",umaxtostr(size_t_val,buf). Or, since using umaxtostr penalizes 32-bit machines for converting to the 64-bit intermediary, maybe it's worth adding a size_t variant? That, and coreutils has a TODO to remove use of umaxtostr in favor of <inttypes.h> solutions. Finally, within existing LGPLv2+ modules, it is possible for libvirt to manually use "%"PRIuMAX,(uintmax_t)size_t_val everywhere by relying on gnulib's <inttypes.h> replacement, but that's also a painful audit to perform and maintain, and also wastes processor cycles on 32-bit machines for converting to the 64-bit intermediary. [libvirt] Xencaptest.c failing?

Hello, We are running xen3.4.3 on rhel5.4 and trying to build the new libvirt 0.8.3 and the xencaptest is failing. It seems to be failing because it is passing NULL in as the virtconn and it ends up going into the following code section in function xenHypervisorBuildCapabilities: if (sys_interface_version >= SYS_IFACE_MIN_VERS_NUMA) { if (xenDaemonNodeGetTopology(conn, caps) != 0) { virCapabilitiesFree(caps); return NULL; } } And that throws an error because conn is empty. I don't see how that could ever work with the virtconn NULL. If I force it to be lower version number then it passes fine. I think its figuring we are sys_interface_version=6. Any ideas? Thanks, Tom

Hi guys, Does anyone know if it's possible to override the default locations used for the TLS client certificate and it's private key, as used in migration? We have overrides in libvirtd.conf for the server cert and its private key, but I'm not seeing anything for the corresponding client pieces. [libvirt] [PATCH] PHYP: Bad comparison when checking for existing domain name

The check was altered in 8c48743b9737ad4d246ab6043fd299316f9a2091 and got too strict, I've no clue how that snuck in. This check makes every try to open a connection using the ESX driver fail with an invalid argument error. [libvirt] [PATCH] Move libvirt-guests init script and config to tools

The 'virsh console' command has been an oddity that only works when run locally, as the same UID as the QEMU instance. This is because it directly opens /dev/pty/XXX. This introduces a formal API for accessing consoles that uses the virStreamPtr APIs. Now any app can open consoles anywhere it can connect to libvirt

Hello, I tried to install "Microsoft Windows 2008 Server R2" on an Amd64 host using Xen-3.4.3. Comparing the output of "xm list -a" of the broken libvirt- and the working xm-configuration I found several differences, especially with "pae": Using "xm create" pae is set to 1, while with libvirt pae is set to 0. After adding the /domain/featues/pae node to libvirts XML domain file, Windows installed fine. [libvirt] XP install: where to ask questions?

On Fedora FC14 I'm trying to install XP under KVM/qemu. It works with VBOx. On FC14, kvm/qemu I've used F5 to select i486 C-step, but after the formatting step, I get a message that VNC no longer connects with the hypervisor. Googled, but no help. Is this the list to discuss this sort of issue? If not, where? sean

To my surprise, the compilation still failed; the culprit is that upstream deleted an enum value. I thought about doing a configure check and #defining the old UNKNOWN name to alias the existing UNDEFINED name, but that would only fix one of the two cases; the switch statement would still fail to compile in that case due to a duplicate label. So I think this patch is the right approach. Hi, We've been working on a program called sync_manager that implements shared-storage-based leases to protect shared resources. One way we'd like to use it is to protect vm images that reside on shared storage, i.e. preventing two vm's on two hosts from using the same image at once. It's functional, and the next big step is using it through libvirt. sync_manager "wraps" a process, i.e. acquires a lease, forks&execs a process, renews the lease wile the process runs, and releases the lease when the process exits. While the process runs, it has exclusive access to whatever resource was named in the lease that was acquired. A command would be something like this: sync_manager daemon -i <host_id> -n <vm_id> -l <lease> -c <command> <args> <host_id> is integer between 1 and 2000 that is statically assigned to each host. <vm_id> is a unique identifer for the process that will be run, e.g. the vm name or uuid. <lease> defines the shared storage area that sync_manager should use for performing the disk-paxos based synchronization. It consists of <resource_name>:<path>:<offset>, where <resource_name> is likely to be the vm name/uuid (or the name of the vm's disk image), and <path>:<offset> is an area of shared storage that has been allocated for sync_manager to use (a separate area for each resource/vm). <command> <args> would be the qemu command line that is currently used. We expect these new config values will need a place to live in the libvirt xml config file, and libvirt will need to fork sync_manager -c qemu rather than qemu directly. At least those are the most obvious things that need doing, there are sure to be other api or functional issues. sync_manager only forks when running the command, and doesn't change any fd's, so any command output should appear unchanged to libvirt. Would there be any problem with sync_manager also printing its own warnings and errors to stderr?
