When qemuMonitorSetCapabilities() fails, there is no need to call qemuMonitorClose(), because the caller will already see the error code and tear down the entire VM. This idea sprang from an IRC conversation, but I don't have time to do it myself at the moment. If you're looking for a great way to help development, it would be nice to teach tests/testutils.c:virtTestLoadFile how to read a file with backslash-newline pairs and flatten those into a single line. Then rewrite all the tests/*data/*.args files to use line continuations, rather than being monstrous 1000-character lines. Regression introduced in commit e6b68d7. Prior to that point, handlesAlloc was always a multiple of EVENT_ALLOC_EXTENT, and was an integer (so even if the subtraction wrapped, a negative value was less than the count and did not try to free the handles array). But after that point, VIR_RESIZE_N made handlesAlloc grow geometrically, so handlesAlloc could be 49 when handlesCount was 47, while still freeing off only 10 at a time, and eventually reach handlesAlloc 7 and handlesCount 1. Since (size_t)(7 - 10) is indeed greater than 1, this then tried to free 10 elements, which had the awful effect of nuking the handles array while there were still live handles. Which leads to crashes like this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=670848 * daemon/event.c (virEventDispatchHandles): Cache watch while the lock is still held, as eventLoop.handles might be relocated outside the lock. [libvirt] Planning for next release and discussions on project process

So we are around the end of the month, i.e. the time where I usually come out and suggest to enter a freeze within a few days for the next release. However, looking at the git history I note that we have only around 125 patches commited since 0.8.7 was released and while I'm fairly convinced that time based releases are a really good thing (allowing people to see their patches out within a predictable delay, and allowing the whole ecosystem of distros/users to plan accordingly), it's also time I think to open up the process to the growing (or at least changing) set of people involved in building libvirt. I usually ask if everybody agrees on the next freeze but I have to make the initial selection based on the calendar and my own agenda (or Red Hat one). Other projects I know use things like weekly teleconferences to discuss ther development plans, or IRC meetings. My opinion is that phone is not alway convenient/eficient, IRC has the advantage of being more open (no spoken english barrier), less intrusive, and it's nearly trivial to extract and publish some kind of minutes. But both suffer from the timezone problem, basically if there is meeting time it's gonna be during insane hours for someone somewhere (we have a large set of developpers in the US, Matthias and Dan are in Europe, Justin is in Australia, I'm in China now and I think the Fujitsu developpers too) One possibility could be to use a mix of IRC channel gathering and an Etherpad file (very convenient tool try it), I just created one at http://ietherpad.com/oETnXKdcFf to try this out and put my own sugegstions, then others can come and put their own feedback even if they happen to not be online at the time of the meeting. To come back to the release, maybe we can do 2 release for Jan-Mar since we didn't released early in Jan and Feb is short, so I would suggest to plan a release before Feb 15, entering a freeze around the 7th Feb. Hello there, I don't know whether or not you are only interested in the x86 / x86_64 architecture, but I think you could also be interested in the small bit of code which I have programmed. Since the release of libvirt 0.8.5, there is a small bit of s390x architecture code (one line) within libvirt which has given me the impression that you could be interested in my small bit of code. I study 'computer science' at the University of Tuebingen (Germany) and each student has to do a research study during his studies on his way to receiving his diploma. One of my goals is to implement basic s390x functions into libvirt in order to be able to start / create virtual machines on a s390x architecture (i.e. on our IBM Mainframe z9 at the university) more easily. Our Setup is (as just mentioned) an IBM Mainframe z9 on which I have the root access to a zLinux (which runs native on two LPARs) with the OS "SUSE Enterprise 11 SP1" and a kernel 2.6.34. (Our test virtual machine is a copy of the running zLinux.) I have actually implemented my patch into libvirt release 0.8.6 but I think a git patch would be more practical for you, so I have implemented it into git today (see underneath or attachment). The following XML file creates a virtual machine on my zLinux with my git patch which is listed underneath (or attachment). As you can see, there is not much that needs to be done so that libvirt can create rudimentary virtual machines on IBM Mainframe z9 (under an zLinux). Running 'make check' can sometimes fail in the gnulib/tests subdirectory, when doing an incremental build, because ./bootstrap generates a Makefile.am that tries to refer to ../../.. instead of ../.., and gets lost. This may be an upstream gnulib bug, where a more elegant solution will present itself in the future: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.gnulib.bugs/24898 But in the meantime, I was able to reproduce both the issue, and this solution to work around it. * bootstrap.conf (bootstrap_epilogue): Ensure that no stray ../../.. components remain in gnulib/tests/Makefile.in. In QEMU, the card itself is a PCI device, but it requires a codec (either -device hda-output or -device hda-duplex) to actually output sound. Specifying <sound model='ich6'/> gives us -device intel-hda -device hda-duplex I think it's important that a simple <sound model='ich6'/> sets up a useful codec, to have consistent behavior with all other sound cards. This is basically Dan's proposal of <sound model='ich6'> <codec type='output' slot='0'/> <codec type='duplex' slot='3'/> </sound> without the codec bits implemented. The important thing is to keep a consistent API here, we don't want some <sound> devs require tweaking codecs but not others. In QEMU, the card itself is a PCI device, but it requires a codec (either -device hda-output or -device hda-duplex) to actually output sound. Specifying <sound model='ich6'/> gives us -device intel-hda -device hda-duplex I think it's important that a simple <sound model='ich6'/> sets up a useful codec, to have consistent behavior with all other sound cards. This is basically Dan's proposal of <sound model='ich6'> <codec type='output' slot='0'/> <codec type='duplex' slot='3'/> </sound> without the codec bits implemented. The important thing is to keep a consistent API here, we don't want some <sound> devs require tweaking codecs but not others. In QEMU, the card itself is a PCI device, but it requires a codec (either -device hda-output or -device hda-duplex) to actually output sound. Specifying <sound model='ich6'/> gives us -device intel-hda -device hda-duplex I think it's important that a simple <sound model='ich6'/> sets up a useful codec, to have consistent behavior with all other sound cards. This is basically Dan's proposal of <sound model='ich6'> <codec type='output' slot='0'/> <codec type='duplex' slot='3'/> </sound> without the codec bits implemented. The important thing is to keep a consistent API here, we don't want some <sound> devs require tweaking codecs but not others. Steps I see to accomplishing this: - every <sound> device has a <codec type='default'/> (unless codecs are manually specified) - <codec type='none'/> is required to specify 'no codecs' - new audio settings like mic=on|off could then be exposed in <sound> or <codec> in a consistent manner for all sound models One difference from danpb's suggestion is that the codec id takes the form ${soundid}-codec-${cad}, rather than codec${soundid}${cad}, just for readability. Also, QEMU seems to set the bus name as ${soundid}.0. Is that expected? I'm looking into creating a driver for the new Xen xl/libxl toolstack (aka libxenlight [1]), set to become the default in upcoming Xen 4.1.0 release. My first hurdle is deciding whether this should be a new driver or integrated with existing xen-unified driver. Initially I thought a new driver would be a better approach - a clean break from the old code, similar to the xenapi driver. libxenlight is also stateless (no managed domains), which seems like another good argument for a new driver. But libxenlight is really just another interface into the same hypervisor, so in that regard it should be a xen-unified subdriver. There are certainly benefits to the xen-unified subdriver approach, e.g. the existing hypervisor and xenstore subdrivers can be leveraged, the former providing all the capabilities code. But AFAIK, libxenlight and xend should not be used together, so I don't think we would want the xend subdriver activated if libxenlight is detected. Supposedly xl can be used as a direct replacement for xm, allowing unconditional use of that subdriver. BTW, Ian Jackson responded [2] to some of my questions regarding compatibility between old and new toolstack if you are interested. I'd like to hear other's opinions on a new driver vs. a xen-unified subdriver. Hi, everyone In an environment with multiple host machines, I want to select a suitable host automatically on which I run a VM depending on machine's load. Libvirt has APIs to get host machine's information, but I think these APIs aren't enough for above purpose. So I suggest below changes. What do you think? * virNodeGetInfo() This API can get "CPU frequency"(mhz member of virNodeInfo) from "cpu MHz" of /proc/cpuinfo. This value isn't constant, because it may be decrease by power saving feature.(cf. cpuspeed on RHEL) This value is very useful for getting *present* cpu frequency, but I want to get Maximum CPU frequency, too. I want to add max_mhz member in struct virNodeInfo from /sys/device/system/cpu/cpuXX/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq. * virNodeGetFreeMemory() This API returns amount of free memory of the host machine's all node, but this value doesn't include host's cache/buffer memory. For above purpose, it would be more suitable to account cache/buffer as free memory, because most of cache/buffer memory are reclaimable. But I think virNodeGetFreeMemory()'s ABI should not change easily. I want to add function virNodeGetCacheBufferMemory(). It returns amount of cache + buffer memory from /proc/meminfo. * virSysinfoRead() This API is completely internal. But DMI type1 information(dmidecode -t1) is useful for above purpose, because it's one of the information which suppose to processing capacity about host machine. Hi, this is the patch for to support multiple serial ports for Xen driver. The definition for Xen has been introduced in BZ #614004 and this is adding support to libvirt-based tools. The patch was originally written for RHEL-5 and libvirt 0.8.2 (RHEL-5.6) where it has been tested using the virsh command and correct device creation has been confirmed in the xend.log to have the same data for serial ports using both `xm create` and `virsh start` commands. Also, domains with both single and multiple serial ports has been tested to confirm it won't introduce any regression and everything was working fine according to my testing. This patch is the forward-port of RHEL-5 version of the patch. [libvirt] How can I improve the performance of libvirt when running many virtual machines on same host

Hi, I am using Xen 4 as hypervisor and using libvirt 0.8.4 to communicate with it. When I run more than 35 virtual machines on the host, Libvirt starts to run extremely slow and I cant even execute a /"virsh list/". The memory usage of libvirtd is around 468288K. Is there any way to improve the performance of libvirt? Is there any maximum number of virtual machines libvirt can manage without having a poor performace? Best Regards, Diego Dias
