Berrange" <berrange(a)redhat.com> When booting a virtual machine with a kernel/initrd it is possible to pass command line arguments using the <cmdline>...args...</cmdline> element in the guest XML. These appear to the kernel / init process in /proc/cmdline. When booting a container we do not have a custom /proc/cmdline, but we can easily set an environment variable for it. Ideally we could pass individual arguments to the init process as a regular set of 'char *argv[]' parameters, but that would involve libvirt parsing the <cmdline> XML text. Problems have been encountered/realized with the practice of unconditionally setting the multifunction bit for all functions of all devices. PATCH 2/2 remedies that (details in its own commit comment). PATCH 1/2 is a one-liner I fixed in the meantime which will cause a simple conflict if it's not applied to other branches at the same time as PATCH 2/2, so I'm sending them together.

If the regexes supported (?:pvs)?, then we could handle this by optionally matching but not returning the initial command name. But it doesn't. So add a new char* argument to virStorageBackendRunProgRegex(). If that argument is NULL then we act as usual. Otherwise, if the string at that argument is found at the start of a returned line, we drop that before running the regex. With this patch, virt-manager shows me lvs with command_names 1 or 0. The definitions of PVS_BASE etc may want to be moved into the configure scripts (though given how PVS is found, IIUC that could only happen if pvs was a link to pvs_real), but in any case no sense dealing with that until we're sure this is an ok way to handle it. Trying to investigate & debug the keepalive series I decided we needed a better way to trace the RPC protocol than the regular debug messages. Ideally we'd have a wireshark dissector but that seems like it will be an awful lot of work todo. [libvirt] [PATCH 1/1] [RFC] Parallels Server Bare Metal driver stub

Parallels Server Bare Metal is a virtualization solution which allows to run both Containers (OpenVZ-like) and virtual machines (like any other hardware hypervisor). This patch implements initial driver stub with almost no functionality except an ability to open and close driver. At the same time it contains initialization of Parallels API and clearly demonstrates supposed approach to future driver implementation. In particular, I suppose to use parallels-virtualization-sdk library provisioned with the PSBM distribution (and separately also) for PSBM's virtual servers management. Libguestfs provides very nice functionality for applications that need to work with disk images. The includes provisioning applications that set up or customize disk images. It also includes backup applications that want to look inside disk image snapshots - both at the block and file level. What's missing for libguestfs to fill this role is integration that allows libvirt and libguestfs to work together with the same network-transparent remote API approach. In the past we have discussed remoting libguestfs and Richard presented possible approaches: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2011-May/msg00093.html Could libvirt could provide a secure channel over which the libguestfs client that an application is linked against talks to the remote guestfsd? Would libguestfs need some new parameters to connect to a remote libvirtd and create its appliance VM? In terms of application use cases, I'm thinking along the lines of using libvirt to enumerate storage volumes and then switching to libguestfs to actually access the storage volume remotely. Is there enough information exposed by libvirt today to switch over to libguestfs and point it at the storage volume/image file? Stefan

This patch fixes the regression with using named pipes for qemu serial devices noted in: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=740478 The problem was that, while new code in libvirt looks for a single bidirectional fifo of the name given in the config, then relabels that and continues without looking for / relabelling the two unidirectional fifos named ${name}.in and ${name}.out, qemu looks in the opposite order. So if the user had naively created all three fifos, libvirt would relabel the bidirectional fifo to allow qemu access, but qemu would attempt to use the two unidirectional fifos and fail (because it didn't have proper permissions/rights). The solution implemented here is to always look for and chown/relabel both types of fifos, then let qemu decide which one it wants to use (in the unusual case that both are present). If one of the types is present, libvirt will silently ignore when the other type is missing (since that will be the most common case), but if neither type is present, there will be an error logged about failing to relabel/chown one of the bidirectional pipes. (Likewise, if one direction of the unidirectional pipes is present but the other is missing, this will also result in an error log). (Note commit d37c6a3a (which first appeared in libvirt-0.9.2) added the code that checked for a bidirectional fifo. There was a flaw in the container side though, causing it todo partial setup work, before waiting for the initial controller handshake. This in turn meant some of the controller setup could fail, and obscure the real error from the container setup. Moving the lxcContainerWaitForContinue call to be the first thing the container does solves that. The controller still, however, pollutes the log with a message about the container handshake failing, when the container shuts down during startup. I have some time this week to work on libvirt and thought Daniel's suggestion [1] for adding AHCI support in the qemu driver would be a useful endeavor. I've managed to start a qemu instance using AHCI with attached hackery, iff I have a controller defined. E.g. <disk type='file' device='disk'> <driver name='qemu' type='raw'/> <source file='/var/lib/libvirt/images/test/disk0.raw'/> <target dev='sda' bus='sata'/> </disk> <controller type='sata' index='0'> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x03' function='0x0'/> </controller> which results in qemu args -device ahci,id=ahci0,bus=pci.0,multifunction=on,addr=0x3.0x0 -drive file=/var/lib/libvirt/images/test/disk0.raw,if=none,id=drive-sata-dik0,format=raw -device ide-drive,bus=ahci0.0,drive=drive-sata-disk0,id=sata-disk0,bootindex=1 If the controller is not explicitly defined, the AHCI device (-device ahci,...) is not created and qemu fails with qemu-kvm: -device ide-drive,bus=ahci0.0,drive=drive-sata-disk0,id=sata-disk0,bootindex=1: Bus 'a hci0.0' not found I'm not quite sure how to create the controller when not explicitly defined in the config. If the daemon is restarted so we reconnect to monitor, cdrom media can be ejected. In that case we don't want to show it in domain xml, or require it on migration destination.
