This series adds command line file descriptor passing support to the -drive option. This is a follow-on to the existing QMP fd passing support provided in the following patch series: comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.emulators.qemu/165463 An example of using the new -drive fd and opaque options: qemu-kvm -drive fd=24,opaque="rdwr:/path/file",index=0,media=disk When an fd, and optionally opaque, are passed with -drive, they are added to an automatically generated fd set. The file name is also generated in the form of "/dev/fdset/nnn", where nnn is the fd set ID. qemu_open() already knows how to handle a filename of this format. qemu_open() searches the corresponding fd set for an fd and when it finds a match, QEMU goes on to use a dup of that fd just like it would have used an fd that it opened itself. [libvirt] with latest libvirt(from git) on F18, time to take internal snapshot increases as snapshot count rises

Hi, the below three internal snapshots were taken when the guest is running 'live'. Any hints on why the time to take snapshots keep increasing ? The output buffer for virFileReadAll was too small for systems with more than 30 CPUs which leads to a log entry and incorrect behavior. The new size will be sufficient for the current architectural limits. Currently, we are checking if libvirt.so contains public symbols. However, sometimes we rename an internal symbol and forget to change libvirt_private.syms accordingly. [libvirt] [libvirt-php] Function calls blocking on Ubuntu 12.04

Dear List, Please note I am not subscribed to this list. I just wanted to state my problem, and will wait for a fix when it comes. I have sucessfully compiled libvirt-php-0.4.5 on Ubuntu 12.04. I ran into some problems when using the library in simple php code, specifically trying to retrieve a screenshot. 1. libvirt_domain_get_screenshot_api returns a PHP fatal about it not being defined ?!? I have not looked into this at all. It was the first of the two I tried, and went on for the other :) 2. libvirt_domain_get_screenshot blocks forever I investigated this one, as from my debug logging, I could see things were going right. My browser just never finishes loading. I traced it down vnc.c on line x where a loop is started. The loop never seems to finish (unsure why though), and commenting out the loop fixes my problem. I noticed that in two places, we require util-linux, and in a third, we require util-linux-ng. On Fedora (I tested F15 through rawhide), util-linux-ng is obsoleted by util-linux; on RHEL 6, util-linux is obsoleted by util-linux-ng. That is, on either platform, either name will get you the correct package installed (where the preferred name on fedora is util-linux, and on RHEL 6 is util-linux-ng). But on RHEL 5, there is no util-linux-ng * libvirt.spec.in (Requires): Use util-linux, not util-linux-ng. --- I debated about pushing this under the trivial rule, but decided not to. Compare the table of contents on http://libvirt.org/migration.html to most other pages on libvirt.org. For some reason, the build process of converting migration.html.in into live html is rendering all links to internal anchors as '#' instead of full '#name' links. I notice that radvd is started for any ISOLATED (non-forwarding) network with an IPv6 definition. Why? In fact, I believe that there should be a way of defining a virtual network where neither dnsmasq nor radvd are started. My assumption is that virtual servers will be defined on the network as needed. I assume that the network addresses, etc. are needed by software somewhere deep in the bowels of the kernel and related software. Thus, it should not be possible to have guests use IPv4 or IPv6 addresses on a network other than those defined. Comments? Gene

[libvirt] Problems live migrating a Windows VM - Inconsistent?

Hello, I noticed some issues migrating a VM 1) I had to have ssh key authentication exchanged or it would refuse to connect tunneled to the remote libvirtd server 2) When it attempts to finish live migrating the VM it fails saying it can't find the domain on the remote libvirtd server host However, if I run the command again to migrate, it DOES migrate the VM over, however the Windows guest is not usable, cant type/use mouse, but i can see the VM display fine. I can gracefully shut the VM down from virt-manager and I see the VM shut down gracefully from display attached via spice. This seems like two bugs? Hi, This is mostly a cut/paste from a bugzilla I just filed, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=862887 - Dave Allan mentioned I should post it on the mailing list for comments. I was trying to program up a libvirt nwfilter rule to restrict the ARP destination IP address (in the request) to be a subnet. I can specify one using ebtables directly, but not via a filter. Looking on libvirt.org seems to show it must be an IP address, don't know if anyone's thought about changing that to support a subnet? $ libvirtd --version libvirtd (libvirt) 0.9.8 I created a file that looks something like this: <filter name='only-arp-dstip-net' chain='arp'> <rule action='drop' direction='out' priority='550'> <arp match='no' arpdstipaddr='10.1.2.0/24' /> </rule> </filter> But when it's defined, it loses the arpdstipaddr part: <filter name='only-arp-dstip-net' chain='arp' priority='-500'> <uuid>a4f2f8a4-a590-b406-e4cd-97580a153545</uuid> <rule action='drop' direction='out' priority='550'> <arp/> </rule> </filter> And the corresponding ebtables rule is: Bridge chain: I-vnet0-arp, entries: 7, policy: ACCEPT <snip> -p ARP -j DROP , pcnt = 0 -- bcnt = 0 Using ebtables works: $ sudo ebtables -t nat -A I-vnet0-arp -p ARP --arp-ip-dst 10.1.2.0/24 -j DROP Bridge chain: I-vnet0-arp, entries: 7, policy: ACCEPT <snip> -p ARP --arp-ip-dst 10.1.2.0/24 -j DROP , pcnt = 0 -- bcnt = 0 The use case I have is that I have a bridge with proxy_arp=1, but I don't want to respond for all IP addresses, just a certain range. Looking mid page at: http://libvirt.org/formatnwfilter.html#nwfelemsReservedVars I see that there are some un-implemented filtering variables for IPv6. Conspicuously absent is a variable set for the content handed out by radvd. The changes back at 0.8.0 [Apr 12 2010] seem to be the last time this area was touched [ The interaction of the dhcpd, a dhcp6d, and the radvd as to DNS server assignment is also on the horizon with the roll in of the systemd ] I used the search tool to look for a current 'ROADMAP' without getting meaningful results; The 'TODO' page is empty [1]; the patch queue page seems unmaintained [2]. I cannot find a 'roadmap' posting in my archive this year ;( With the exhaustion of 'easy' ipv4 space allocations, we are turning to deploying ipv6 only VM's, but finding that we are manually maintaining filtering rule sets, rather than handing them out in the XML configs Is there movement in this space 'behind the scenes'? Commit c579d6b added a sledgehammer to silence spurious warnings from gcc 4.2, but in the process, it also silenced useful warnings from newer gcc (such as 4.4). As a result, a bug slipped in to commit 0caccb58. Since libvirt switched to QMP capabilities probing recently, it starts QEMU process used for this probing with -daemonize, which means virCommandAbort can no longer reach these processes. As a result of that, restarting libvirtd will leave several new QEMU processes behind. Hi everyone, I am new using libvirt, Do I have to install libvirt-0.10.2.tar.gz alone, or I need to install libvirt-java-0.4.9.tar.gz after to developing codes using java? When doing snapshots, the filesystem freeze function used the agent entering function that expects the qemud_driver unlocked. This might cause a deadlock of the qemu driver if the agent does not respond. Several people have reported that if the .gnulib submodule is dirty, then 'make' will go into an infinite loop attempting to rerun bootstrap, because that never cleans up the dirty submodule. By default, we should halt and make the user investigate, but if the user doesn't know why or care that the submodule is dirty, I also added the ability to 'make CLEAN_SUBMODULE=1' to get things going again. The benefit over syslog is that it accepts structured log data, so the journald can store individual items like code file/line/func separately from the string message. Tools which require structured log data can then query the journal to extract exactly what they desire without resorting to string parsing While systemd provides a simple client library for logging, it is more convenient for libvirt to directly write its own client code. This lets us build up the iovec's on the stack, avoiding the need to alloc memory when writing log messages. This series of commits has the end goal of allowing per-port data stored in the Open vSwitch DB to be transported during live migration. This is done by first providing a generic infrastructure for transporting network data, adding some utility functions specific to Open vSwitch, and hooking the two together. The framework provided is generic in that other networking data could be transferred as well by simply adding in additional hooks as needed. [libvirt] curious about dnsmasq --conf-file=

I understand why there currently is "--conf-file= " on the dnsmasq command line ... you do not want dnsmasq to use anything in /etc/dnsmasq.conf. OK, but dnsmasq is picking up a lot of command line parameters. Why aren't these parameters put into a libvirt specific conf file such as is done with radvd? Is there some reason that only command line parameters are used? I can understand that it could be a matter of style/personal choice by the individual that originally did it and, it currently works, so why mess with it? But, if a patch was created which changed things from the command line to a conf file, would that be accepted? BTW, I noticed that there are no tests for what is done with radvd but there are tests for the dnsmasq command line options. These tests would no longer apply and thus be deleted. Can anyone cite an example test for parameters put into a conf file? Or, have some of those tests become OBE? I must say that I have found the tests valuable in seeing and debugging additional command line parameters. Gene

Is the libnl3-devel problem where, if it is installed, libvirt will build using libnl3 but, on F17, netcf is still using libnl and the result is ... not pretty. If someone believes this is fixed in 0.10.2, they are in error. Question: Just how hard would be be to get netcf rebuilt and using libnl3? It is just that I keep getting bit in the rear end by this problem ... current NetworkManager requires libnl3-devel to build but, if you then build libvirt without removing libnl3-devel, everything looks good but it is not. You would think that I would remember from the last time I went around with this problem ... but id did not Gene

This is a non-recursive lock, hence hang. Since qemuMonitorPtr is a virObject, the unref call in qemuProcessHandleMonitorDestroy no longer needs mutex protection. Lookup virtual machine list with the required fields (configStatus, name, and config.uuid) to make esxVI_GetVirtualMachineIdentity work. No need to call esxVI_GetNumberOfSnapshotTrees. rootSnapshotTreeList can be tested for emptiness by checking it for NULL. esxVI_LookupRootSnapshotTreeList already does the error reporting, don't overwrite it. Check if autostart is enabled at all before looking up the individual autostart setting of a virtual machine. Reorder VIR_EXPAND_N(doms, ndoms, 1) to avoid leaking the result of the call to virGetDomain if VIR_EXPAND_N fails. [libvirt] TSC scaling interface to management

HW TSC scaling is a feature of AMD processors that allows a multiplier to be specified to the TSC frequency exposed to the guest. KVM also contains provision to trap TSC ("KVM: Infrastructure for software and hardware based TSC rate scaling" cc578287e3224d0da) or advance TSC frequency. This is useful when migrating to a host with different frequency and the guest is possibly using direct RDTSC instructions for purposes other than measuring cycles (that is, it previously calculated cycles-per-second, and uses that information which is stale after migration). "qemu-x86: Set tsc_khz in kvm when supported" (e7429073ed1a76518) added support for tsc_khz= option in QEMU. I am proposing the following changes so that management applications can work with this: 1) New option for tsc_khz, which is tsc_khz=host (QEMU command line option). Host means that QEMU is responsible for retrieving the TSC frequency of the host processor and use that. Management application does not have to deal with the burden. 2) New subsection with tsc_khz value. Destination host should consult supported features of running kernel and fail if feature is unsupported. It is not necessary to use this tsc_khz setting with modern guests using paravirtual clocks, or when its known that applications make proper use of the time interface provided by operating systems. On the other hand, legacy applications or setups which require no modification and correct operation while virtualized and make use of RDTSC might need this. Therefore it appears that this "tsc_khz=auto" option can be specified only if the user specifies so (it can be a per-guest flag hidden in the management configuration/manual). The systemd journal provides a highly efficient way for apps to generate structured log messages. Since systemd will be used by default on future Fedora/RHEL distros (and likely many others), we should take advantage of the journal out of the box for improved logging capabilities. Amongst other things, this allows very easy browsing of the libvirt logs after the fact, filtering on filename / line number / function name and more. This is a big benefit to debugging, compared to current case where we need to decide the filters when starting libvirtd. For example it becomes possible to configure libvirt to include all QEMU logging, and then later ask the journal for only messages related to the QEMU json monitor.

Hi, I hit this problem recently when trying to create a bridge with an IPv6 address on a 3.2 kernel: dnsmasq (and, further, radvd) would not bind to the given address, waiting 20s and then giving up with -EADDRNOTAVAIL (resp. exiting immediately with "error parsing or activating the config file", without libvirt noticing it, BTW). This can be reproduced with (I think) any kernel >= 2.6.39 and the following XML (to be used with "virsh net-create"): <network> <name>test-bridge</name> <bridge name='testbr0' /> <ip family='ipv6' address='fd00::1' prefix='64'> </ip> </network> (it happens even when you have an IPv4, too) The problem is that since commit [1] (which, ironically, was made to “help IPv6 autoconfiguration”) the linux bridge code makes bridges behave like “real” devices regarding carrier detection. This makes the bridges created by libvirt, which are started without any up devices, stay with the NO-CARRIER flag set, and thus prevents DAD (Duplicate address detection) from happening, thus letting the IPv6 address flagged as “tentative”. Such addresses cannot be bound to (see RFC 2462), so dnsmasq fails binding to it (for radvd, it detects that "interface XXX is not RUNNING", thus that "interface XXX does not exist, ignoring the interface" (sic)). It seems that this behavior was enhanced somehow with commit [2] by avoiding setting NO-CARRIER on empty bridges, but I couldn't reproduce this behavior on my kernel. Anyway, with the “dummy tap to set MAC address” trick, this wouldn't work. To fix this, the idea is to get the bridge's attached device to be up so that DAD can happen (deactivating DAD altogether is not a good idea, I think). Currently, libvirt creates a dummy TAP device to set the MAC address of the bridge, keeping it down. But even if we set this device up, it is not RUNNING as soon as the tap file descriptor attached to it is closed, thus still preventing DAD. So, we must modify the API a bit, so that we can get the fd, keep the tap device persistent, run the daemons, and close it after DAD has taken place. After that, the bridge will be flagged NO-CARRIER again, but the daemons will be running, even if not happy about the device's state (but we don't really care about the bridge's daemons doing anything when no up interface is connected to it). Other solutions that I envisioned were: * Keeping the *-nic interface up: this would waste an fd for each bridge during all its life. May be acceptable, I don't really know. * Stop using the dummy tap trick, and set the MAC address directly on the bridge: it is possible since quite some time it seems, even if then there is the problem of the bridge not being RUNNING when empty, contrary to what [2] says, so this will need fixing (and this fix only happened in 3.1, so it wouldn't work for 2.6.39) * Using the --interface option of dnsmasq, but I saw somewhere that it's not used by libvirt for backward compatibility. I am not sure this would solve this problem, though, as I don't know how dnsmasq binds itself to it with this option. This is why this patch does what's described earlier. This patch also makes radvd start even if the interface is “missing” (i.e. it is not RUNNING), as it daemonizes before binding to it, and thus sometimes does it after the interface has been brought down by us (by closing the tap fd), and then originally stops. This also makes it stop yelling about it in the logs when the interface is down at a later time.
