[libvirt] Using unix domain sockets with serial devices

Hello, The Oz automated install program (http://github.com/clalancette/oz) uses a serial device inside a guest to communicate the guest IP address to a listener on the host; once the host has the IP address, other customization steps can take place. This serial device in the guest is currently backed by a TCP socket on the host. I use the following libvirt XML snippet to set this up: <serial type="tcp"> <source mode="bind" host="127.0.0.1" service="9412"/> <protocol type="raw"/> <target port="1"/> </serial> DanB points out that this is probably insecure, and we should use named pipes or Unix domain sockets instead. I was able to implement Unix domain sockets with a few minor changes to Oz, but I'm running into a permissions problem. Essentially, the problem is that when you run Oz as a regular, non-root user, there is no convenient place on the filesystem where both the qemu user can read and write the socket, and where the user that is running Oz can read the socket. I've tried using /var/lib/libvirt/qemu/*.port, but that directory is 0650, so the regular user has no permission to it. Similarly, the qemu user may not have permission to read the users home directory, so I can't really put it there either. Does anyone have any ideas of what I might do here? I'm open to changing to any of Unix domain sockets, pipes, UDP sockets, or whatever, but it has to work for both root and non-root users. Thanks in advance, Chris

Initially proposed as [1], but then changed to comment fix only. VMDK can have internal version set to 2 when there are few features added which do not affect us. Thanks to Jan's commit a1ee8e18 this can be easily fixed by adding it to list of supported versions. Based on a report by Chandrashekar Shastri, at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=979360 On systems where git cannot access the outside world, a developer can instead arrange to get a copy of gnulib at the right commit via side channels (such as NFS share drives), set GNULIB_SRCDIR, then use ./autogen.sh --no-git. In this setup, we will now avoid direct use of git. Of course, this means no automatic gnulib updates when libvirt.git updates its submodule, but it is expected that any developer in such a situation is already prepared to deal with the fallout. * .gnulib: Update to latest, for bootstrap. * bootstrap: Synchronize from gnulib. * autogen.sh (no_git): Avoid git when requested. * cfg.mk (_update_required): Skip automatic rerun of bootstrap if we can't use git. In other words there is no separate guest operating system install to build or manager. At this point in time libvirt-sandbox can create sandboxes using either LXC or KVM, and should in theory be extendable to any libvirt driver. Hello, fellow developers! I am a GSoC candidate this year working for libvirt.org. My project is "Introduce API to query IP addresses for given domain". So far I've come up with an API and I want to get your opinion before I start writing the rest so I don't follow the wrong direction. Following are the valid commands: domifaddr <domain-name> domifaddr <domain-name> <interface-name> domifaddr <domain-name> <interface-name> <method> domifaddr <domain-name> <method> methods: (i) Querying qemu-guest-agent (ii) Getting info from dnsmasq.leases file (iii) Using the nwfilter to snoop the traffic If no method is mentioned, qemu-guest-agent will be used. Previous attempts by Michal had used structs and xml. Structs bring in restrictions and xml has to be parsed. Hence I am not planning to continue with either of these. As a start, I would like to know your comments about my API which queries the qemu-guest-agent and returns the results in virTypedParameter **params. [libvirt] attach-device error: XML error: unknown device type

Hi, On Fedora 18 (libvirt 0.10.2.6-1) I'm trying to add a new serial device to a KVM VM with: virsh attach-device foobar /tmp/serial.xml and I keep getting: error: Failed to attach device from /tmp/serial.xml error: XML error: unknown device type with serial.xml: <serial type='file'> <source path='/tmp/serialfile'/> <target port='1'/> </serial> Though I tried it w/o the <target> tag, with and without the --config flag, and with and without the guest running. Assuming it's similar, I tried and was successful in adding this device via virt-manager, though it complains if the VM is running (which is fine). What am I doing wrong with the virsh attach-device command or XML? Two complaints of FORWARD_NULL due to 'tmp' being accessed after a strchr() without first checking if the return was NULL. For the pci-bridge controller, if index less than zero, there is no alert for it, and libvirt will pass this value to qemu-kvm. Hi All, We are testing the upstream KVM with : Kernel, Qemu, Libvirt, Virt-Manager is built from the source (git). kernel version : 3.9.0+ qemu version : QEMU emulator version 1.5.0 libvirt version : 1.0.5 virt-install : 0.600.3 I have followed the below steps to test the "Live migration w/o shared storage" feature : 1. Created the qemu-img create -f qcow2 vm.qcow2 12G on the destination host which is same as the source. 2. Started the guest on the source 3. Started the vncdisplay to monitor the guest 4. Initiated the migration "virsh migrate --live rhel64-64 qemu+ssh://9.126.89.202/system --verbose --copy-storage-all" 5. It started the copying the storage from souce to destination (conitinously monitored it was growing) 6. Guest on the destination was paused and was running on the source 7. At some point the VM on the source shutdown and got an error on the vnc display as " Viewport: write: Broken pipe (32)" and the VM on the destination was undefined. [libvirt] [PATCH 0/4] libxl: implement some chuncks of the NUMA interface

Hi Jim, Everyone, First patch series, so maybe a small introduction is required: I'm Dario and I work for Citrix on improving the NUMA support of Xen. This patch series implements some of the missing bits and pieces, in the libxl driver, regarding obtaining per-host and per-domain NUMA related information. It's not the full libvirt NUMA interface, since we don't have all we would need for that in Xen yet (we will in the next version, 4.4), but it's certainly better than having nothing! :-) Basically, I'm enhancing capability reporting, to cover NUMA topology (patch 01), and I'm implementing nodeGetCellsFreeMemory (patch 02) and virDomainGetNumaParameters (patch 04) for the libxl driver. This last one requires at least Xen 4.3, so I put the implementation within the proper #ifdef-ery. What I'm really not sure about is patch 03, which is something I need if I want patch 04 to function properly. Basically it is about advertising that the libxl driver supports VIR_TYPED_PARAM_STRING. I looked at how that is done in the qemu driver, but I'm not entirely sure I completely understood the logic behind it, so, please, tell me if I missed or misinterpreted anything! In particular, should I have added more of those "flags &= ~VIR_TYPED_PARAM_STRING_OKAY;" statements, as it happens in the qemu driver? If yes, in which functions? Finally, allow me to say that it was a while that I wanted start hacking a bit on libvirt. I'm really glad I've eventually been able to do so, and I definitely plan to continue (with particular focus on NUMA related stuff). Hello. I'm very happy with libvirt and qemu, that great software! (after some playing i want to create golang bindings to libvirt).. Now i provide ext4 fs for qcow2 images (raid1 with two sata disks). Now i don't need live migration (but may need it in feature). What is the best way to provide disks to vm in case of performance, ability to create backups (i don't want lvm snapshots)? As i search from google more speed can take physical storage - lvm. Hi All, The Libvirt compliation fails to bootstarp for local gnulib. We do not have outbound access for the test machines. So, we ll pull the gnulib from and copy to the test machines. When we run ./bootstrap --no-git --gnulib-srcdir=/path/to/local, below is the error: ./bootstrap: Bootstrapping from checked-out libvirt sources... ./bootstrap: consider installing git-merge-changelog from gnulib ./bootstrap: getting gnulib files... fatal: Needed a single revision Unable to find current revision in submodule path '.gnulib' If we run autogen.sh it tries to pull from git though the $GNULIB_SRCDIR is exported with the local gnulib. ./autogen.sh '--no-git' I am going to run ./configure with no arguments - if you wish to pass any to it, please specify them on the ./autogen.sh command line. running bootstrap --no-git... ./bootstrap: Bootstrapping from checked-out libvirt sources... ./bootstrap: consider installing git-merge-changelog from gnulib ./bootstrap: getting gnulib files... fatal: Unable to look up git.sv.gnu.org (port 9418) (Name or service not known) Unable to fetch in submodule path '.gnulib' Failed to bootstrap, please investigate. The latest mingw headers on Fedora 19 fail to build with gnulib without an update.
