The following is the latest version of my API proposal for incremental backups, and follows along from the demo I presented as part of my KVM Forum 2018 talk: https://kvmforum2018.sched.com/event/FzuB/facilitating-incremental-backup-e… The patches are also available via https://repo.or.cz/libvirt/ericb.git at the tag backup-v4. Integration with external snapshots is still not included in these patches, although I have been playing more with that locally, and I still haven't gotten a working demonstration of a push-mode incremental backup. At this point, I'm posting mainly because there have been enough changes in qemu (the backup APIs are now stable! and in qemu.git in time for 4.0) and libvirt (several releases and code cleanups in between, such that the v3 no longer applies easily), while I continue to work locally on more features, addressing the review comments I got on v3, and remove the 'wip' tag on several of the later patches. [libvirt] [PATCH] iscsi_direct: Reset pool capacity and allocation just before refresh

Jirka reported a bug that with every 'virsh pool-refresh' an iscsi-direct pool would grow and grow. The problem is that virISCSIDirectRefreshVol() only adds to def->capacity and def->allocation but nothing clears it out to begin with. [libvirt] [PATCH] tools/virt-host-validate: Fix IOMMU check on s390x

When running virt-host-validate on an s390x host, the tool currently warns that it is "Unknown if this platform has IOMMU support". We can use the common check for entries in sys/kernel/iommu_groups here, too, but it only makes sense to check it if there are also PCI devices available. It's also common on s390x that there are no PCI devices assigned to the LPAR, and in that case there is no need for the PCI-related IOMMU, so without PCI devices we should simply skip this test. [libvirt] [PATCH] conf: don't output managed attr for non-pci hostdevs

It is ignored on input for non pci hostdevs as written in docs. I guess it would be better if the attr was disabled to be specified in the first place instead but such behaviour is already documented. At least let's not output it back. This will fix issue when managed appeared on output for non pci hostdevs when it was not specified on input. While looking at my work on incremental backups, Nir raised a good point: if we want to recreate a set of known checkpoints on one machine that will be taking over a domain from another machine, my initial proposal required making multiple API calls to list the XML for each checkpoint on the source, and then more API calls to redefine each checkpoint on the destination; it also had the drawback that the list has to be presented in topological order (the API won't let you define a child checkpoint if the parent is not defined first). He asked if I could instead add bulk APIs, for getting the XML for all checkpoints at once, and then for redefining all checkpoints at once. Since my checkpoint code borrows heavily from concepts in the snapshot code, I chose to tackle the problem by starting with this series, which does the same thing for snapshots as what I plan to do for checkpoints. That is, since this patch series adds virDomainGetXMLDesc(, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SNAPSHOTS) and virDomainSnapshotCreateXML(, VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_CREATE_REDEFINE_LIST), the checkpoint series will add virDOmainGetXMLDesc(, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_CHECKPOINTS) and virDomainCheckpointCreateXML(, VIR_DOMAIN_CHECKPOINT_CREATE_REDEFINE_LIST) with very similar code. Hi, I'm starting this thread in order to continue with the ongoing efforts to bring actual integration testing to libvirt. Currently, the status quo is that we build libvirt (along with our unit test suite) using different OS-flavoured VMs in ci.centos.org. Andrea put a tremendous amount of work to not only automate the whole process of creating the VMs but also having a way for a dev to re-create the same environment locally without jenkins by using the lcitool. #TL;DR (if you're from QEMU, no TLDR for you ;), there are questions to answer) - we need to run functional tests upstream on ci.centos.org -> pure VM testing environment (nested for migration) vs Docker images - we need to host the upstream test suite somewhere -> main libvirt.git repo vs libvirt-jenkins-ci.git vs new standalone repo - what framework to use for the test suite -> TCK vs avocado-vt vs plain avocado #THE LONG STORY SHORT As far as the functional test suite goes, there's an already existing integration with the avocado-vt and a massive number of test cases at [1] which is currently not used for upstream testing, primarily because of the huge number of test cases (and also many unnecessary legacy test cases). An alternative set of functional test cases is available as part of the libvirt-tck framework [2]. The obvious question now is how can we build upon any of this and introduce proper functional testing of upstream libvirt to our jenkins environment at ci.centos.org, so I formulated the following discussion points as I think these are crucial to sort out before we move on to the test suite itself: * Infrastructure/Storage requirements (need for hosting pre-build images?) - one of the main goals we should strive for with upstream CI is that every developer should be able to run the integration test suite on their own machine (conveniently) prior to submitting their patchset to the list - we need a reproducible environment to ensure that we don't get different results across different platforms (including ci.centos.org) therefore we could provide pre-built images with environment already set up to run the suite in an L1 guest. - as for performing migration tests, we could utilize nested virt - should we go this way, having some publicly accessible storage to host all the pre-built images is a key problem to solve -> an estimate of how much we're currently using: roughly 130G from our 500G allocation at ci.centos.org to store 8 qcow2 images + 2 freebsd isos -> we're also fairly generous with how much we allocate for a guest image as most of the guests don't even use half of the 20G allocation -> considering sparsifying the pre-built images and compressing them + adding a ton of dependencies to run the suite, extending the pool of distros by including ubuntu 16 + 18, 200-250G is IMHO quite a generous estimate of our real need -> we need to find a party willing to give us the estimated amount of publicly accessible storage and consider whether we'd need any funds for that -> we'd have to also talk to other projects that have done a similar thing about possible caveats related to hosting images, e.g. bandwidth -> as for ci.centos.org, it does provide publicly accessible folder where projects can store artifacts (the documentation even mentions VM images), there might a limit though [3] - alternatively, we could use Docker images to test migration instead of nested virt (and not only migration) -> we'd loose support for non-Linux platforms like FreeBSD which we would not if we used nested * Hosting the test suite itself - the main point to discuss here is whether the test suite should be part of the main libvirt repo following QEMU's lead by example or should they live inside a separate repo (a new one or as part of libvirt-jenkins-ci [4] -> the question here for QEMU folks is: *"What was the rationale for QEMU to decide to have avocado-qemu as part of the main repo?"* * What framework to use for the test suite - libvirt-tck because it already contains a bunch of very useful tests as mentioned in the beginning - using the avocado-vt plugin because that's what's the existing libvirt-test-provider [1] is about - pure avocado for its community popularity and continuous development and once again follow QEMU leading by example -> and again a question for QEMU folks: *"What was QEMU's take on this and why did they decide to go with avocado-qemu?"* * Integrating the test suite with the main libvirt.git repo - if we host the suite as part of libvirt-jenkins-ci as mentioned in the previous section then we could make libvirt-jenkins-ci a submodule of libvirt.git and enhance the toolchain by having something like 'make integration' that would prepare the selected guests and execute the test suite in them (only on demand) Regards, Erik [1] https://github.com/autotest/tp-libvirt [2] https://libvirt.org/testtck.html [3] https://wiki.centos.org/QaWiki/CI/GettingStarted#head-a46ee49e8818ef9b50225… [4] https://github.com/libvirt/libvirt-jenkins-ci

This applies the same improvements previously done in libvirt: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2018-April/msg01004.html https://www.berrange.com/posts/2018/11/29/improved-translation-po-file-hand… The key problems with our current approach are: - The pot & po files stored in GIT contain huge set of annotations about source file names & line numbers. These are out of date as soon as a change is commited to git following a translation refresh. This makes diffs impossible to meaningfully review, as they are 98% noise, 2% signal. - The po file messages are sorted by source location, so when we move code between files, or rename files, the po file message order changes for no good reason. This makes diffs even more impossible to review. - The po files contain entries for all messages even if most have no translation, bloating size of po/ data stored in git - Whenever 'make dist' is run, it alters all the pot and po files, so developers need to then reset their content to match git HEAD manually. This is caused by having auto-generated content (source file locations) mixed in with the static content (the actual translated strings) After this series, we only minimized po files in git, with the redundated & outdated source locations info stripped. This stripped info is re-added automatically during build to create the real .po files, that we distribute, and/or upload to translators in Zanata. As a result the po directory is smaller in size, and when refreshing from Zanata, we have git commits that clearly show *only* the altered translations, nothing else. The importance of this cannot be overstated - by having these clear diffs when doing this change in libvirt, I discovered a serious bug in the Zanata client that has been screwing up translations in every project that uses Zanata by adding bogus "fuzzy" annotations. vcpupin will fail when maxvcpus is larger than current vcpu: virsh vcpupin win7 --vcpu 0 --cpulist 5-6 error: Requested operation is not valid: cpu affinity is not supported win7 xml in the command above is like below: ... <vcpu current="3" placement="static">8</vcpu> ... The reason is vcpu[3] and vcpu[4] have zero tids and should not been compared as valid situation in qemuDomainRefreshVcpuInfo(). We construct JSON objects e.g. for setting the VNC password but then just VIR_FREE the strings cointained inside. If it was the password string would be kept on the heap. If the child process of the cmd is running and asyncioThread is polling, cmd->errbuf have been alloced at least one byte but not yet operate (*cmd->errbuf)[errlen] = '\0', access of wfd->err_msg in virFileWrapperFdFree at this time will cause risk of heap-buffer-overflow. So, we need to put VIR_WARN(wfd->err_msg) after VIR_FREE(wfd->err_msg). Besides, since virCommandFree has included virCommandAbort, there is no need to call virCommandAbort extraly. There is no overly critical access opened by this, but still we continue to only add those to the guests that have gl enabled. The most "discussion worthy" part of it most likely are the wildcards into /dev/devices/... but they are rather specific and read only - furthermore retracing those in advance starting from the rendernode most likely is rather error prone, so I went with the wildcards. The iptables-ebtables package is meant as a drop-in replacement for the native ebtables package, but it formats some items in the -L output differently, leading to failure of scripts that depend on the output of ebtables -L. In particular: with old ebtables IPv6 prefixes are output as a netmask (e.g.: "/ffff:fc00") with iptables-ebtables IPv6 prefixes are always output as a numeric prefix (e.g. "/22"), and suppressed completely if the prefix is /128. This difference is also described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1674536 "old" ebtables upstream has just accepted a patch to change its output to match that of iptables-ebtables: https://marc.info/?l=netfilter-devel&m=155000828923204&w=2 so it makes sense for libvirt-tck to accept the new format (as well as the old). As with the patch for fixing up MAC addresses with leading 0s, this patch also uses sed to apply a substitution to the scraped output of ebtables -L. However, rather than keeping the comparison (expected) output in the old (netmask) form, it is changed to the new (prefix) form, and the sed commands change netmasks to prefixes. Hello, I’m interested in using hvf also know as Hypervisor. framework acceleration with QEMU which has been supported since 2.12. I’ve gone through the documentation and the code base, I was unable to find an element that could enable it in libvirt. I have come across a patch (link <https://www.spinics.net/linux/fedora/libvir/msg175338.html>) which target this particular feature, but I could not find it in the repo so I guess it has not been applied. Is something that will be supported in the future?

[libvirt] Configuring pflash devices for OVMF firmware

We configure OVMF firmware for PC machine types with -drive if=pflash. This is pretty much the last remaining use of -drive in libvirt we can't yet replace by -blockdev. Such a replacement is desirable, because -blockdev + -device is more flexible than -drive if=pflash. Also, once we don't need -drive with new QEMU anymore, the path for deleting all -drive code in libvirt some day is open. As with all desirables, the benefit needs to exceed the cost. I'm going to describe the status quo, how we got there (briefly and much simplified), then sketch how to replace -drive if=pflash. I'm afraid this is fairly long; sorry. Please correct misunderstandings. Beware, my libvirt and OVMF fu is much weaker than my QEMU fu. In the beginning, board code read the BIOS from a fixed file and mapped it into the guest's address space. Life was simple. On physical hardware, the BIOS can persist a bit of state across (cold) reboots by storing it in (non-volatile) CMOS RAM. We didn't bother. Simple. Fast forward several years, and The Law of OS Envy (every program wants to grow into a full-blown operating system) has asserted itself: PC Firmware has grown from an 8KiB ROM using a few bytes of volatile and non-volatile RAM into a multi-megabyte beast with much more complex storage needs. On today's physical PC hardware, firmware is stored in flash memory. There's code, and there's persistent data. For obvious reasons, the code should be write-protected except when doing an upgrade. "Secure boot" additionally needs to restrict data writes to system management mode (SMM). Here's our first iteration of OVMF support, at QEMU level: -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/where/ever/OVMF.fd Generic code creates a block backend for it. Magic board code picks up the backend, creates a frontend (a cfi.pflash01 device), and maps it into the guest's address space. At libvirt level: <loader type="pflash">/where/ever/OVMF.fd</loader> Problem: while the flash device model provides read-only capability, it's all-or-nothing. You can't tell it to write-protect just the part holding code. The examples above don't write-protect anything. /where/ever/OVMF.fd better be writable exclusively. The flash device model could be enhanced, but we went down a different path: we split the single OVMF image OVMF.fd ("unified build") into a code image OVMF_CODE.fd and a data image OVMF_VARS.fd ("split build"). At QEMU level: -drive if=pflash,format=raw,readonly,file=/usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE.fd -drive if=pflash,format=raw,file=/where/ever/OVMF_VARS.fd OVMF_CODE.fd must be unit 0, and OVMF_VARS.fd must be unit 1. Generic code creates two block backends. Magic board code picks them up, creates a frontend (a cfi.pflash01 device) for each, and maps them into the guest's address space. Note there are *two* virtual flash devices now, whereas physical hardware commonly has just one. At libvirt level: <loader type="pflash" readonly="yes">/usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_CODE.fd</loader> <nvram template="/usr/share/OVMF/OVMF_VARS.fd">/var/libvirt/nvram/${guest}_VARS.fd</nvram> This treats OVMF_VARS.fd as a read-only template, and gives each guest its own writable copy, which is nice. The flash device model supports restricting writes to SMM (remember, that's required for secure boot). It's controlled by cfi.pflash01 property secure, off by default. If we created the device model with -device, we'd simply pass secure=on. But since we create it with -drive if=pflash, we can't. Instead we have to use -global driver=cfi.pflash01,property=secure,value=on This flips the global default value. Awkward, but works out okay, because (1) the flash device holding OVMF_VARS.fd wants this value, and (2) the flash device holding OVMF_CODE.fd doesn't care (it's read-only), and (3) there is no way to create additional flash devices. At the libvirt level, we add secure='yes' to the loader element. We also have to enable SMM emulation. At QEMU level: -machine smm=on At libvirt level: <features> <smm state='on'/> </features> Note that the above configuration examples involve selecting OVMF images. A bit of an inconvenience compared to BIOS, where the default "use the BIOS shipped with QEMU" pretty much just works. To add annoyance to inconvenience, different distributions have different ideas on where to install OVMF images. And because that's not complicated enough, we also have to pair code with data images. And because that's still not complicated enough, any specific machine type may work only with a subset of the available firmwares. The proposed way to deal with all that works as follows. Each set of firmware images comes with a descriptor file. These are JSON and conform to the QAPI schema docs/interop/firmware.json. Among the descriptors that declare support for the kind of machine we want, we pick (really: the management application picks) the one with the highest priority. The distribution provides default priorities, which system administrator and user can override. firmware.json documents this in much more detail. I wrote "proposed", because as far as I can tell, neither distributions nor libvirt are there, yet. After all this text, I'm finally ready to curve towards -blockdev. Going from -drive if=T, T!=none to -blockdev involves two steps. The first step replaces if=T with if=none and -device. The second step replaces -drive if=none with -blockdev. That step is "obvious" (it took us a few years to get to obvious, but I digress). The difficulty is in the first step. Two issues: (1) cfi.pflash01 isn't available with -device. (2) "Magic board code picks up the backend [created for -drive if=pflash], creates a frontend (a cfi.pflash01 device), and maps it into the guest's address space." When we replace if=pflash by if=none, we get to replicate that magic on top of -device. Issue (1) isn't too hard: we add the device to the dynamic sysbus device white-list, move a sysbus_mmio_map() from pflash_cfi01_realize() into pflash_cfi01_realize(). The latter requires a new device property to configure the base address. I got a working prototype. Since this makes the device model's name and properties ABI, review would be advisable. To solve (2), we first have to understand the magic. Device cfi.pflash01 has the following properties: num-blocks Size of the device in blocks sector-length Size of a block (admire the choice of names) width Bank width big-endian Endianess (d'oh) id0, id1, id2, id3 Some kind of device ID, guest-visible, default to zero, few boards change it name Memory region name (why is this even configurable?) phys-addr Physical base address (this is the new device property mentioned above) secure For restricting access to firmware, default off device-width you don't want to know, there is a default, but it's documented as "bad, do not use", yet pretty much all boards use it max-device-width defaults to device-width not actually set anywhere old-multiple-chip-handling back-compat gunk for machine types 2.8 and older The magic board code in hw/i386/pc_sysfw.c configures as follows: num-blocks computed from backend size sector-length 4096 width 1 big-endian 0 id0, id1, id2, id3 all 0 name system.pflash<U>, where U is -drive's unit number phys-addr computed so unit 0 ends right below 0x100000000, unit n+1 ends at right below unit n "secure", "device-width", "max-device-width", "old-multiple-chip-handling" are left at the default. One additional bit of magic is actually in libvirt: it configures "secure" by flipping its default with -global driver=cfi.pflash01,property=secure,value=on. Now let's consider how to replicate this magic on top of device. Perhaps machine-type specific defaults could take care of sector-length, width, big-endian, id0, id1, id2, id3. Leaves num-blocks, name, and phys-addr. Perhaps the realize() method could default num-blocks to size of backend. But that doesn't really help the management application, because it needs to mess with the size anyway to compute phys-addr. So scratch that idea. Moving the magic code to compute num-blocks, phys-addr and name to the management application is certainly possible, but ugly. Note that the values computed are fixed when the firmware gets deployed. If we record them in the firmware descriptor, the management application doesn't need magic, it can simply pass on the values obtained from the descriptor. We'd want to include sector-length in the descriptor then, to ensure num-block has a defined meaning. Same technique could take care of width, big-endian, ... in case machine-type specific defaults turn out to be inadequate for them. Opinions? One more problem: the magic board code does a bit more than just configure the cfi.pflash01 device. That additional magic needs to be generalized to work regardless of whether the device gets configured with -drive if=pflash or with -device. I got a working prototype.

I sent V1 of this patch way back in October: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2018-October/msg00889.html but then self-NACKed it because I had written the patch to add the network prefix to dhcp-range, but IPv4 requires the netmask rather than range. Unfortunately, when I modified the patch accordingly the getnameinfo() function began failing, I couldn't immediately see why, and I had to pack everything up and go to KVM Forum. After that, I promptly forgot to look back at it. Today I finally revisited the problem (after the person who originally found it sent a reminder), and discovered the failure of getnameinfo() was due to a bug in a function that I added to the virSocketAddr library in 2010! While looking at my work on incremental backups, Nir raised a good point: if we want to recreate a set of known checkpoints on one machine that will be taking over a domain from another machine, my initial proposal required making multiple API calls to list the XML for each checkpoint on the source, and then more API calls to redefine each checkpoint on the destination; it also had the drawback that the list has to be presented in topological order (the API won't let you define a child checkpoint if the parent is not defined first). He asked if I could instead add bulk APIs, for getting the XML for all checkpoints at once, and then for redefining all checkpoints at once. Since my checkpoint code borrows heavily from concepts in the snapshot code, I chose to tackle the problem by starting with this series, which does the same thing for snapshots as what I plan to do for checkpoints. That is, since this patch series adds virDomainGetXMLDesc(, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_SNAPSHOTS) and virDomainSnapshotCreateXML(, VIR_DOMAIN_SNAPSHOT_CREATE_REDEFINE_LIST), the checkpoint series will add virDOmainGetXMLDesc(, VIR_DOMAIN_XML_CHECKPOINTS) and virDomainCheckpointCreateXML(, VIR_DOMAIN_CHECKPOINT_CREATE_REDEFINE_LIST) with very similar code. Note that I'm posting the series now to start review; the bulk query is fully implemented (patch 6), while the bulk redefine still needs more work (patch 7 defines the API, but the actual implementation is trickier, so I'll be posting additional patches later once I get them working).
