When the bridge re-attach handling was moved out of the network driver and into the hypervisor driver (commit b806a60e) as a part of the refactor to split the network driver into a separate daemon, the check was accidentally changed to only check for type='bridge'. The check for type in this case needs to check for type='network' as well. (at the time we thought that type='network' and type='bridge' could be conflated for interface actual type, but this turned out to be too problematic to do). Hi, Fixing memory soundness bugs in Stream::recv, and other bugs in both Stream::recv and Stream::send. The method Stream::recv takes a size argument that it passes on as the nbytes argument to virStreamRecv. The problem is that the corresponding data pointer points to a local stack allocated array with a fixed size of 2048. So calling Stream::recv with a size larger than 2048 can cause virStreamRecv to write past the given buffer! The library calls CStr::from_ptr(data) on the locally allocated buffer after virStreamRecv returns. CStr::from_ptr will scan the memory from the given pointer for the terminating null byte. There is no guarantee this buffer will properly end with a null byte. The buffer is initialized with only nulls. But since virStreamRecv can overwrite the entire buffer (and beyond!), there is no guarantee there will be a null byte in the buffer at this point. As a result, CStr::from_ptr can continue to read past the buffer. This can cause either reading invalid memory, or it can cause the method to return a string containing data from the stack way past the data written by virStreamRecv. Heartbleed style issue. The code does not check for the -2 error code in the return value of virStreamRecv, treating it as a success. It looks like it will make it just return an empty string as result. But a bug nonetheless. After parsing the buffer as a C string in Stream::recv, it is lossily converted into a Rust UTF-8 string with CStr::to_string_lossy. It can cause the data to be modified before it is returned to the caller. U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER will be inserted on invalid UTF-8 codepoints. The FFI bindings for both virStreamRecv and virStreamSend are wrong. They specify the nbytes argument as c_int instead of size_t as the C library does. I don't have access to SMTP on my dev machine. [libvirt] [dbus PATCH] build: convert to Meson/Ninja build system

Meson build system is simple and quick compared to Autotools and it's able to fully replace our Autotools usage. There are few drawbacks as it's a fairly new build system, it requires Python 3.5 and Ninja 1.5.0, it's still evolving and the user base is not that large and there were some tweaks required to achieve the same functionality. However, there are benefits, the configure and build time is way shorter and build definition files are more readable and easier to maintain. Replace 'sc_prohibit_semicolon_at_eol_in_python' with generic 'sc_flake8' rule to check python code style. Now 'sc_flake8' just check the error E703: 'statement ends with a semicolon'. In future, we could use '--select' to introduce more rules. Hi, all I recently discovered that <target dev=''/> input is allowed[*] by qemu driver's defineXML for <interface> element. On start it will turn into 'tap<N>'. At the same time empty value is not allowed by schema. This name is generated by kernel on linux. I wonder how to deal with this. 1. Fix schema to allow empty value for dev attribute. Additionally fix migrating to clear out this autogenerated name. This way we have 2 options to autogenerate dev name. First as described above. Second is by ommiting target element. The naming will be 'vnet<N>' in the latter case. Having these 2 options looks redundant. 2. Don't allow to start domains with such configuration. We can not fail definition because disappearing VMs on libvirt update looks too unpleasant. This way we don't have two different set of autogenerated names. This can even go unnoticed given we fail such starts anyway after [1] (which is fixed by [*]). [1] is commited on 2018 Jul 23 and released in 4.6.0. However Centos 7 is based on 4.5.0 and virNetDevTapCreate has logic to copy generated tap name from kernel like since the beginning (I managed to follow the history to 2011). To my knowledge, everything in libvirt is now prepared to fully use -blockdev way to configure disks in qemu. There is one known qemu bug though: Internal snapshots don't work with -blockdev: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1658981 Since I can't in good faith ask for merging this patchset yet I'd like to give it some more testing I'm suggesting that we push it and revert it during freeze or add a capability check once qemu is fixed. [libvirt] [PATCH 0/3] qemu: make runtime validation of NetDefs more consistent

There is some validation of NetDefs (<interface>) that can't be done until runtime, due to not knowing the exact configuration until that time. This needs to happen in 3 places: 1) in the qemu commandline when a new guest is started, 2) when an <interface> is hotplugged, and 3) when an <interface> is updated. Until now, there some (but not all) validation copy-pasted between (1) and (2), and none of that was present for (3). These patches move all the validation from (1) (which is the most complete) into a separate function, and then call that function from all three places, so the exact same validation is done in all cases. (These patches are a followup to a patch I sent *long* ago in a naive attempt to fix https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1502754 - my original patch did fix the problem when starting a guest with an invalid <interface> config, but not when hotplugging or updating such an interface.) NB: I noticed that if someone tries to specify <bandwidth> for an interface type that doesn't support it, we only give a warning, not an error, due to a fear that there are existing management apps that add <bandwidth> to all types of interfaces, and we don't want them to suddenly fail to run (I got this info from the BZ associated with the commit that added the warning). This seems to me to be going a bit too far - I think that (at least upstream) we should turn this into an error, and let the regression testing of said management apps catch the behavior change so they can fix their code. Hi all, I think I've found a bug in either libvirt or spice. I'll give a short description here, but I have a stack exchange question that also has information here: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/541127/how-to-listen-on-same-port-… Basically, have spice for VM1 listen to port 5900 on 10.0.0.2 and spice for VM2 listen to port 5900 on 10.0.0.3, and you'll get an error message saying the ports collide, even though they shouldn't be (they are listening on different addresses). I've tried going to the #virt irc channel with very limited responses, and would appreciate hearing what you all have to say about this issue. Thanks! - Michael

Since the introduction of the virNetworkPort object, the network driver has a persistent record of ports that have been created against the networks. Thus the hypervisor drivers no longer communicate to the network driver during libvirtd restart. This change, however, meant that the connection usage counts were no longer re-initialized during a libvirtd restart. It feels a bit odd to report a built in list of FW images when we have FW descriptor files. Especially, when some weird architectures are concerned. For instance, OVMF_CODE.fd is reported even for non-x86_64/non-i386 arches, like ppc. But if FW descriptor files are taken into the picture then no OVMF_CODE.fd is ever reported. One can argue, that these patches are not necessary, because the whole point of FW descriptor files is that users do not have to bother with paths to FW images. And that is true. However, the whole ecosystem of FW descriptor files allows sys admins and regular users to write their own FW descriptor files and thus reporting what paths libvirt found might come handy when writing those descriptors.
