When building using -Og, gcc sees that some variables can be used uninitialized It can be debatable whether it is possible with our codeflow, but functions should be self-contained and initializations are always good. The return instead of goto is due to actualType being used in the cleanup. This series extends query-cpu-definitions to include two extra fields: "runnable", and "unavailable-features". This will return information based on the current machine and accelerator only. [libvirt] [PATCH] storage: Adjust qemu-img switches check

Since we support QEMU 0.12 and later, checking for support of specific flags added prior to that isn't necessary. Thus start with the base of having the "-o options" available for the qemu-img create option and then determine whether we have the compat option for qcow2 files (which would be necessary up through qemu 2.0 where the default changes to compat 0.11). Current stats cache uses same lock as domain cache, namely lock of virDomainObjPtr. First this is not necessary, domain cache is used to translate id of object of interest from libvirt to vzsdk one. Besides this domain object is not used. Second this is risky game as lock is dropped on waiting for stat events from sdk deep down on stack so callers throughout the stack should be written very carefully. This patch series makes stats cache self locking and thus making code much more solid. This is done thru introducing extra lock for stats cache. Statistics API functions first use domain cache then drop domain lock, query stats cache and unreference domain object. Patches 1-4 conform API functions to this structure. Patches 5-7 makes subsidiary improvments. Patch 8 finally introduce new lock. Last patches are cleanup[9] and bugfix[10]. We've noticed libvirt-tck test 100-apply-verify-host.t failing recently on libvirt.git master and I finally got around to bisecting it to commit b3d06987. I haven't looked at the test in detail, but it appears to expect a broadcast address of 10.1.2.255, however finds an address of 0.0.0.0 after commit b3d06987. More "extractable" changes from my work on adding luks support. While working through changes in storage_backend.c I found that the building of the 'qemu-img' command to create a luks volume will need to create a secret object. In order to do that I found if I took the qemu_command code and moved things around a bit, then I would be able to access the API's that I need. Moving the command line building from qemu_command.c to virjson.c seemed logical since it was multipurpose/generic anyway. I'm not "tied" to the API name chosen - if there's suggestions, I'll adjust. Then splitting out the generation of the secret object props into their own API and then eventually into secret_util.c seemed to be the best avenue. I can then include secret_util into the storage driver. The last change just cleans up the secinfo command building processing. It was "complicated" when there was going to be hostdev and disk code trying to generate the same objects... Now that just seems less important. When/if iSCSI/hostdev support for the AES secret is added, I'll made the appropriate adjustments then. [libvirt] RFC: turn cpu 'host-model' into 'custom' for active config on domain start

Hi, everyone. Cpu mode 'host-model' is not convinient for migration in current form. Consider migration from less capable host to more capable one - it is possible. But then migration backwards is impossible despite the fact that qemu process on destination is running with the same model and features as on source because migration does not update 'host-model' cpu upon migration on destination. The problem is that on migrating back instead of taking current cpu config 'host-model' is expanded again and gain extra features of destination and migration failed by source (new destination) side. What if we change cpu for active config from 'host-model' into 'custom' in the starting process? Then this issue will be fixed. It is quite reasonable from my POV - 'host-model' is effectively about taking active domain cpu from host on start, after that active domain cpu is on its own. Persistent config stays 'host-model' so migrating of active domain and restarting it gains extra features of new host as before. Nikolay

virtio-vsock support has been added to the nfs-ganesha NFS server. I'm currently working on upstreaming virtio-vsock into Linux and QEMU. I also have patches for the Linux NFS client and server. Users wishing to share a file system with the guest will need to configure the NFS server. Perhaps libvirt could handle that given that it already has <filesystem> syntax. The basic task is setting up either the kernel nfsd or nfs-ganesha for the VM to access the NFS export(s). When the VM is destroy the NFS server can be shut down. Does this sound like a responsibility that libvirt should handle? Stefan

In short - the problem is that libvirtd process starts qemu process under non-root user. Since qemu starts under non-root process, then qemu can't connect to DPDK unix domain sockets created by ovs-vswitcd process that runs under "root". There are two solutions to this problem: 1. let ovs-vswitchd process to chown its socket from "root" to "libvirt" group and/or user (this is what Aarons patch proposes) 2. make libvirtd process to start qemu process under "root" but then let qemu to downgrade via "-run-as" flag after qemu has opened the Unix Domain socket. Regarding solution #2. I think the necessary changes roughly would be to: 1. invoke virCommandAddArgPair(cmd, "-runas", "libvirt") before starting qemu process; AND 2. revert virCommandSetUID() that automatically downgrades user from "root" to "libvirt" even before qemu starts. I would like to hear feasibility of such solution from libvirt developers? Or maybe there is even a better solution that I am missing? Regarding solution #1. There have already been precedents that other daemons are chowning their sockets so that non-privileged daemons could connect to them. IMHO this is not elegant from security perspective but will at least get the job done if Linux Distribution maintainers (Aaron and Christian) need to ship something out ASAP . The thing I am concerned about this solutions is that ovs-vswitchd could be used to chown() arbitrary files and sockets on file system if there happens to be a bug. [libvirt] [PATCH] network: restart dnsmasq after adding/removing txt and srv records

Although dns host records are stored in a separate configuration file that is reread by dnsmasq when it receives a SIGHUP, the txt and srv records are directly in the dnsmasq .conf file which can't be reread after initial dnsmasq startup. This means that if an srv or txt record is modified in a network config, libvirt needs to restart the dnsmasq process rather than just sending a SIGHUP. virDomainObjSetDefTransient has an unintuitive attribute 'live': when set to 'true', it ignores the virDomainObjIsActive test. The most common usage is on domain startup, where most of the callers want to create a transient definition even though the domain is not yet active. The only place where live=false is still required is virDomainObjGetPersistentDef (and its usage could possibly be cleaned up too, since it's only called in the drivers that already do SetDefTransient on domain startup). Split out the virDomainObjIsActive check into virDomainObjGetPersistentDef and remove it for the rest of the callers along with the 'live' attribute.
