Hello, I noticed qemudDomainSetMemory() / qemudDomainSetVcpus() use the VIR_ERR_INTERNAL_ERROR error code when the caller attempts to set the mem/vcpus of an active domain. In this case, returning something like VIR_ERR_NO_SUPPORT would indicate that this is an invalid call - which would distinguish the error from a failure that occurred during the call. The attached patch fixes a few issues with the storage api python bindings. The pool GetAutostart is now generated as intended. Also the libvirtError class now accepts the pool or vol object passed to it when a command fails. I've just had a chat with Daniel about whether it's time for a new release of libvirt. My own primary focus is getting the virDomain*Peek APIs into a released version so I can use them from Fedora. libvirt 0.4.2 was released on 8th Apr 2008. I just scanned the changelog and there's a pretty long list of new features: - Support for serial and parallel devices in Xend - Network interface model in QEMU network devs - SetVcpus, DomainGetMaxVcpus, VCPU pinning in QEMU - Disk "bus"es - Support for Xenner - Deprecate conn/dom/net fields in virterror - HTML documentation completely restructured - MinGW fixes - Memory leaks plugged - Added HACKING file and lots of work on unifying syntax and methods used in the code base to a single standard - Lots of LXR changes - virDomain*Peek APIs - and of course many bug fixes So is it time for a release? As of a couple weeks ago, the storage driver is only registered if the WITH_LIBVIRTD macro is defined. The configure option --with-libvirtd actually wasn't defining this macro. The attached patch fixes a few issues in the python bindings. First, UUIDString has, to my understanding, never worked. It expected to be passed a buffer to fill with the uuid, which through my tests isn't realistically doable from python. I added custom bindings to fix this, and it now works as expected, taking no arguments and returning a string. UUID for a storage pool wasn't being generated with its custom function, so it too was broken. This is also fixed. I also removed some stale entries for virStorageVol UUID functions from generator.py which were probably just carried along from an old version of the storage api patches (storage volumes don't use UUID). This patch implements virDomainMemoryPeek, which allows callers to peek into guest (virtual) memory. Currently the patch contains a QEMU driver and remote support. There's also a big comment in the source describing how to do Xen. The lxc driver xml parser treats the console element as input when it should be output only. This obviously causes problems when anything other than /dev/ptmx is specified or when a container is shutdown and then restarted without redefining it (so that the console field is reset). This patch treats the console element as output only and always creates a new device when starting a container. Also fixed up a string overflow when storing the device name. Virt-df[1] has now gained the ability to fully parse LVM2 partitions, thus: # virt-df -c qemu:///system -h Filesystem Size Used Available Type rhel51x32kvm:hda1 96.8 MiB 14.6 MiB 82.2 MiB Linux ext2/3 rhel51x32kvm:VolGroup00/LogVol00 6.4 GiB 3.6 GiB 2.8 GiB Linux ext2/3 rhel51x32kvm:VolGroup00/LogVol01 992.0 MiB Linux swap However it still has to do it by opening the local partitions / files, which means it isn't using a "proper" part of libvirt and more importantly it cannot run remotely. I'd like to find out whether the time has come for us to look again at a virDomainBlockPeek call for libvirt. Here is the original thread plus patch from 7 months ago: http://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2007-October/thread.html#00089 (I've attached an updated patch against current CVS). I appreciate that some cases might not be simple (iSCSI?), but the same argument applies to block device statistics too, and we make those available where possible. Hi, I'm trying to set up routed networking using libvirt0.4.2, but not having much joy, I cannot ping from either the host OS, or elsewhere on the network (or inverse from the guest OS). I would really appreciate some assistance as I haven't been able to find many routing examples. I'm using the example provided[0], which does create virbr1. [libvirt] PATCH: Fix check for inactive network

When building up the QEMU command line args we forgot to check for a NULL when creating the TAP device arg. This can happen if the network being connected to the VM is not running. This is something I broke in the refactoring of the ARGV construction in the QEMU driver. Dan. Hello everybody! For the third time, I arranged a "Workshop on Virtualization Technologies" in cooperation with the Linuxhotel in Essen, Germany. Our goal is, to provide developers of Open Source Software related to virtualization, and interested, skilled administrators with the possibility to come together for a weekend to work on their projects, exchange experiences and play around with the technology. The Linuxhotel as a location delivers a great, relaxed athmosphere and a perfect infrastructure to enable carefree working. Hi, A few people around me want to use php or asp to access libvirtd. Along this wish is to access it as 'proxy' for the entire cluster (this is where I come in). My target it to make a proxy for libvirtd that allows all host in the network to be managed by any libvirtd instance that has the sufficient certificate. Now it seems clear that this dispatch/proxy functions are doable. But what I wonder about is the actual access to libvirtd. There seems to be a pretty big warning about the XDR/ RPC calls. My people would like to see bindings to connect to libvirtd by php or asp/.net, is there any progress on that one? Stefan

I'm pleased to announce this very early pre-alpha release of a further set of tools for monitoring virtual machines. The idea is to provide simple commands which can be run outside the virtual machine to monitor its status. These commands don't require you to log in to the virtual machine, or to install any software, since they work entirely by snooping. So they could be very useful for analyzing guests which are stuck / unresponsive / heavily loaded. Done so far: virt-uname like uname(1), print guest's system information virt-dmesg like dmesg(1), print guest's kernel messages Coming soon: virt-ps like ps(1), lists processes virt-free like free(1), lists free memory and swap If virt-ps works out, I might do a 'top'-like command, although of course I can't call it virt-top. I'm open to other suggestions too. Hi, I want to manage a 32 bit i686 guest on an x86_64 host with kvm and libvirt. KVM is perfectly capable of doing this (look e.g. at http://kvm.qumranet.com/kvmwiki/Guest_Support_Status) but libvirt did not allow it. So I created the attached patch to allow it and make it easy to extend the capabilities of kvm and kqemu later on. I did not add anything I'm not sure about, so I did not at 64bit guest on 32bit host (though the page linked above seems to indicate that it works) and did not change the capabilities of kqemu at all (because I don't have any experience with it and never used it). [libvirt] Support for passing arbitrary qemu/kvm admin console commands?

I'm looking at building a framework which makes use of KVM's pseudo-migration support for snapshot management. To my knowledge, this functionality is not presently available through libvirt. Is it possible to send arbitrary qemu/kvm admin console commands to a VM started and controlled by libvirt, or does any requirement for funtionality not presently exposed through libvirt conflict with its use? [libvirt] network unreachable on XEN guest

I created a new network based on the default network. However the network is unreachable to the XEN guest. I used net-dumpxml to print the "default" xml. I changed the network XML network name, bridge name, and uuid and successfully created a new network. I replaced source network attribute in the domain creation XML to point to the new network name. However, the guest can not properly initialize eth0 because the new network is unreachable. It tries to ping the ip assigned to the new bridge but fails. The same guest created with the default network works fine, i.e. it can access the network.
