[libvirt] [RFC] support memory reserved feature and optimize mlock guest memory propose

Hi all： Currently, we use cgroup(memory) to support memory QoS on KVM platform, and use "mlock" on qemu to support "memory reserved". The "mlock" seems to be not appropriate. Now qemu "mlock" memory in the main thread, which would lock iothread (qemu_mutex_lock_iothread), if the memory size is large, that will consume lots of time. It means whenever we want to set a new 'mlock', the VM would be blocked for a while. Here is my optimization: 1. Add a global variable (lock_ram_size) to save the value of "memory reserved"; 2. Add a qmp commond "set_ram_minguarantee" to change lock_ram_size; 3. Create a new thread to mlock(lock_ram_zie), while is waked up by the "set_ram_minguarantee" qmp command. configure check for character devices lock path calls AC_DEFINE_UNQUOTED for VIR_CHRDEV_LOCK_FILE_PATH even if $with_chrdev_lock_files = "no". So the locking code in conf/virchrdev.c: #ifdef VIR_CHRDEV_LOCK_FILE_PATH is compiled in even if it shouldn't, because VIR_CHRDEV_LOCK_FILE_PATH is defined as "no", so it tries to create lock files with strange lock path like 'no/LCK..'. Based on an earlier patch from Chunyan Liu https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2013-September/msg00667.html This patch series adds basic migration support to the libxl driver. Follow-up patches can improve pre-migration checks and add support for additional migration flags. Patches 1-12 are almost exclusively code motion, moving functions from the main driver module into the libxl_domain and libxl_conf modules. Patch13 is rather large and provides the migration implementation. If it is preferred to split patch13 further, I'm open to suggestions on ways to do that. I've done some basic migration testing of this series using NFS shared storage. Error handling only minimally tested though. I attempted a migration to host with a different bridge than the source, verifying the migration failed and the vm was resumed on the source. This is an updated version of my RBD storage pool support patch. Relevant changes since v7 are: - Fixed bug where I compared disk->srcpool->mode to VIR_DOMAIN_DISK_TYPE_NETWORK In response to a couple of items Ján mentioned, I decided not to pursue adding anything to qemuxml2argvtest. The reason I decided not to pursue this is there is not really any need. In comparison with other volume types, RBD already has the same test coverage. Namely, a base set of test-cases without using storage pools, plus a generic storage pool test. In addition, I also attempted to implement a proper check for expected vs actual secret usage, but at that particular point in the code, Ján was correct that the pool definition has not yet been parsed. Thus, I had to keep my bypass. Hello, I passthrough a host usb device to a guest with a bus number and device number in the xml to identify the usb device. When I unplug and then plug back into the same USB physical port, the guest identifies the usb device failed. Because on the host ,the usb device number increases. So , I want to know that whether Libvirt will provide an interface that identifies a host usb device with bus number and physical port . Currently FSFreeze and FSThaw are supported by qemu guest agent and they are used internally in snapshot-create command with --quiesce option. However, when users want to utilize the native snapshot feature of storage devices (such as LVM over iSCSI, various enterprise storage systems, etc.), they need to issue fsfreeze command separately from libvirt-driven snapshots. (OpenStack cinder provides these storages' snapshot feature, but it cannot quiesce the guest filesystems automatically for now.) Although virDomainQemuGuestAgent() API could be used for this purpose, it depends too much on specific hypervisor implementation. This patchset adds virDomainFSFreeze()/virDomainFSThaw() APIs and virsh domfsfreeze/domfsthaw commands to enable the users to freeze and thaw domain's filesystems cleanly. The APIs has mountPoint and flags option currently unsupported for future extension, as virDomainFSTrim() API. [libvirt] Libvirt Java Bindings - adding domain event support - pull request

Hi all I'm new to this list, I've been making use of the Libvirt Java bindings recently. I wanted to make use of domain events yesterday so my application can be alerted when the state of a domain changes etc. However I quickly discovered that domain events are completely broken in the current Java bindings. Whilst some of the Libvirt functions required to support domain events are exposed, the critical underpinnings are not. Specifically there is no support for setting up the event loop. So I have implemented support for domain events in the Java bindings. Currently I've only implemented the following domain event IDs: * VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_LIFECYCLE * VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_REBOOT * VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_ID_RTC_CHANGE Implementing these is enough to test that my implementation is sane, I'm hoping to implement the majority of the other events soon. [libvirt] KVM Domain memory and disk usage

Hi all, I am trying to use virsh to get the memory and storage usage for KVM domain. Right now we can get domain memory statistics through the following virsh cmds: 1. dumpxml: this returns "memory" and "currentMemory" 2. dominfo: this returns "Max memory" and "Used memory" 3. dommemstat: this returns "actual" and "rss" We think "memory" (from dumpxml) = "Max memory" (from dominfo) and "currentMemory" (from dumpxml) = "Used memory" (from dominfo). Can anyone please help us to confirm this? We don't understand what does "actual" stand for in dommemstat. Can anyone please explain us about that? Finally, we want to get the memory utilization of the domain on VM level in percentage. And we derive it as: Utilization = rss / Used memory Can anyone please provide any comment on this? In terms of disk usage, it seems virsh / libvirt does not support any domain disk information right now. If not, can anyone please give us any idea how to get the domain disk information (size, used space and so on)? Thanks a lot, Bruce

This patch series extend the QEMU capabilities XML to report if the underlying QEMU binary supports, or not, the live disk snapshotting. Without this patch series, the only way to know if QEMU has this support is to actually request a disk snapshot and to see what happens. The change is split in four patches: * patch #1 actually adds the new element in the QEMU capabilities XML. formatcaps.html.in wasn't very detailed about the actual XML format, so I've not updated it. Anyone feel free to point out what should be added, and I'll comply. The new element has the form <disksnapshot default='value' toggle='off'> because I'd like to convey two informations: - disk snapshot is supposed to be here, and it is (default='on') - disk snapshot is supposed to be here, and is NOT (default='off') Put in a different way, I tried to help the client as much as possible. I'm not particolary fond of this format, and I'm really open to alternatives here. Perhaps a simpler <disksnapshot/> element can convey the same meaning? Suggestions welcome. * patches #2, #3 Are trivial and they provide the ground for the last patch which add a new unit tests. They are just dependencies for it. I tried to make them less invasive as possible. * patch #4 add a new unit test, aiming to test not only this new feature but also the whole XML capabilities test. [libvirt] [PATCH] sanlock: Truncate domain names longer than SANLK_NAME_LEN

Libvirt uses a domain name to fill in owner_name in sanlock_options in virLockManagerSanlockAcquire. Unfortunately, owner_name is limited to SANLK_NAME_LEN characters (including trailing '\0'), which means domains with longer names fail to start when sanlock is enabled. However, we can truncate the name when setting owner_name as explained by sanlock's author: Setting sanlk_options or the owner_name is unnecessary, and has very little to no benefit. If you do provide something in owner_name, it can be anything, sanlock doesn't care or use it. If you run the command "sanlock status", the output will display a list of clients connected to the sanlock daemon. This client list is displayed as "pid owner_name" if the client has provided an owner_name via sanlk_options. This debugging output is the only usage of owner_name, so its only benefit is to potentially provide a more human friendly output for debugging purposes. networkAllocateActualDevice() is called for *all* interfaces, not just those with type='network'. In that case, it will jump down to its validate: label immediately, without allocating anything. After validation is done, two counters are potentially updated (one for the network, and one for any particular physical device that is chosen), and then networkRunHook() is called. According to commit b4e0299dm if networkAllocateActualDevice() was successful, it will *always* allocate an iface->data.network.actual, so we can use this during networkReleaseActualDevice() to know if there is really anything to undo. We were properly using this information to only decrement the network connections counter if it had previously been incremented, but we were unconditionally unplugging bandwidth and calling the "unplugged" network hook for *all* interfaces (during qemuProcessStop()) whether they had been previously plugged or not. This caused problems if a domain failed to start at some time prior to all interfaces being allocated. (I encountered this when an interface had a bandwidth floor set but no inbound QoS). Hello, Recently I noticed that if I gave no model to qemu, then I would get 'qemu64' as default cpu model. Model 'qemu64' defined in qemu and defined in libvirt both support feature 'svm'. Consider dozen of LXC domains, each of them having this type of interface: <interface type='network'> <mac address='52:54:00:a7:05:4b'/> <source network='default'/> </interface> When starting these domain in parallel, all workers may meet in virNetDevVethCreate() where a race starts. Race over allocating veth pairs because allocation requires two steps: 1) find first nonexistent '/sys/class/net/vnet%d/' 2) run 'ip link add ...' command Now consider two threads. Both of them find N as the first unused veth index but only one of them succeeds allocating it. The other one fails. For such cases, we are running the allocation in a loop with 10 rounds. However this is very flaky synchronization. It should be rather used when libvirt is competing with other process than when libvirt threads fight each other. Therefore, internally we should use mutex to serialize callers, and do the allocation in loop (just in case we are competing with a different process). By the way we have something similar already since 1cf97c87. Hi, Thanks for libvirt. It is a life saver. I am in the process of writing some custom wrappers for libvirt so that it can be easily accessed from nodejs using the nodejs-ffi interfacing (basically describes a way to convert nodejs to c calls). I did write the wrapper on the lines of the examples provided. But I am unable to see my new functions in the libvirt.so file (which nodejs interfacing needs). Which means that my wrappers under <libvirt>/wrappers/ are not getting into libvirt.so like the ones at <libvirt>/examples Can you please guide me as to where I am going wrong? I was able to do a successful configure + make and I thought this will regenerate the new libvirt.so (which it does, but I cant see my new wrapper methods in it). Much appreciated, Thanks, vik.

The shutdown handler may restart a domain when handling a reboot event or when <on_*> is set to 'restart'. Restarting consists of calling libxlVmCleanup followed by libxlVmStart. libxlVmStart will emit a VIR_DOMAIN_EVENT_STARTED event, but the SHUTDOWN event is not emitted until exiting the shutdown handler, after the STARTED event. This patch changes the logic a bit to queue the event at the start of the shutdown action, ensuring it is queued before any subsequent events that may be generated while executing the shutdown action. The first change is that it includes the return status of librados and librbd in log and debug messages making it easier for users to track down the real cause of the problem. The second patch simplifies some code. The third patch leverages the new timeout options from librados. Should the backing Ceph cluster not respond for any reason librados will timeout. This prevents libvirt from handing on a rados_* or rbd_* call and locking up libvirt. This series is the result of a report from Kim Larry [1] about missing shutdown events in the libxl driver. Kim's report revealed that the libxl driver was ignoring the <on_*> domain lifecycle event configuration! Patch1 adds support for the four standard actions (destroy, restart, preserve, and rename-restart) of <on_*>. Patch2 queues the shutdown event earlier in the shutdown handler, to avoid it being delivered after the a start event in the case of a restart. Patches 3 and 4 add support for the extra <on_crash> actions coredump-destroy and coredump-restart. Hi, with my recent work into snapshots with native libgfapi support I've run into an issue with libvirt APIs used to delete snapshots by management apps. The management apps use the APIs to do the job: int virDomainBlockCommit(virDomainPtr dom, const char *disk, const char *base, const char *top, unsigned long bandwidth, unsigned int flags) int virDomainBlockPull(virDomainPtr dom, const char *disk, unsigned long bandwidth, unsigned int flags) int virDomainBlockRebase(virDomainPtr dom, const char *disk, const char *base, unsigned long bandwidth, unsigned int flags) As you can see in the prototypes of these functions (and from the docs for them which I'm not going to copy here) the user can provide the disk specification in two possible options: 1) a full path if it's unambiguous - this is file centric and requires the file to be in the local filesystem 2) a disk name "vda" - this is selected automatically by libvirt but allows to specify only the top image. For systems that want to use remote storage without local representation such as gluster+libgfapi, this doesn't allow to use the APIs to start block jobs. To solve this issue we need a way to specify paths on remote storage in some way. Below are two options we've discussed on IRC. 1) Use URIs along with the file path to specify disk images. This option would add a new, possibly well documented URIs to specify paths for disk images. These would be libvirt defined URIs (but surprisingly "similar" to qemu URIS) so that hypervisors with different storage specification would need a conversion. This would allow to specify the targets as: vda - disk name /path/to/file - legacy way, path file:///path/to/file - new way of file paths block:///dev/blah - new way, block devs gluster://server/vol/img - new way, remote images ... Possible caveats: RBD for example allows to use multiple hosts and we'd need to introduce a possibility to specify it if we'd add support for this on rbd. 2) Export the image chain in the XML and allow to use indexed disk names This option would require to export the backing chain in the XML in some way, either the existing disk source specification in multiple elements (which I don't like as it is a bit convoluted), or possibly again via URIs. Then the user would be allowed to specify vda[2] for the second backing image of the vda disk. With this the internal representations of the backing chain would be used without the need for the user to specify path. A possible caveat here is that if backing chains for some reason will be converted to backing trees, this approach will be invalid. 3) ? anyone suggesting something better? :) Thanks in advance for suggestions and/or new ideas.
