[PATCH] qemu: migration: Call hook script on source host at migration start

Currently, the qemu hook script with the "migrate" operation is only called on the destination host at the beginning of incoming migration. This makes it impossible for the source host to prepare for migration, for example to change storage locks from exclusive to shared mode when using shared LVM storage with lvmlockd. Add a hook call on the source host at the beginning of outgoing migration. The hook is called with "source" as the extra argument to distinguish it from the destination hook which uses "-". The same change is also applied to the libxl driver for consistency. [RFC] Reintroducing customisable hotplug timeouts

I'd like to resurface an earlier proposal [1] to make the unplug timeout user-configurable. With production guests running sustained, non-trivial workloads, we find that hot(un)plug operations regularly takes longer than the current default of 5s. However, the inability to easily configure this timeout means that in the worst case a recompilation with appropriate values set is required for each deployment, which is cumbersome to maintain and patch. The previous proposal [1] also initially made the timeout configurable, however that was specifically for the ppc64 architecture. Therefore, imposing this change for an entire architecture made sense, since it was a universal requirement for that platform. With deployment environments as diverse and varied as x86, having a single, inconfigurable value does not make as much sense now. For x86, such a change is not ideal since the desired timeout value depends very heavily on the deployment environment in use - if it is being performed by a human anything more than 10s is an undesirable user experience [2], as pointed out in the original discussion. However, more relaxed timeout values (e.g. 15-20s) can be more acceptable if the operations are background/ not directly user-facing. It is in these cases where the ability to change the timeout more easily becomes more desirable. To prevent misconfiguration, while maintaining the same out-of-box experience for existing users, I'd also like to propose the following- 1. As mentioned in the original proposal [1], the timeout cannot be set to a value lower than the default timeout of 5s; in these cases a warning will be emitted and the timeout will be reset to the default value. 2. Including an upper cap would also be desirable, in my opinion - any API consumer should not wait endlessly for an async operation to finish. 3. This configuration option will only be described in qemu.conf, not imposed - the out-of-box experience will remain unchanged at the current default (5s) for everyone who does not wish to tweak/is unaware of this value. An administrator who knowingly changes these values is therefore not blindsided by any perceived "hangs" resulting from the use of an increased timeout window. Since this would be a clearly documented and explicitly opt-in behaviour, the benefits in the form of easy modification based on evolving operational needs would be quite significant. Given the varying nature of production environments and specific operational needs at scale, it would therefore be beneficial to reconsider the merits of the original proposal. [PATCH v2] virhostcpu: Fix potential use of unallocated memory

In case of a host that has a large number of cpus offline the count of host cpus and the last bit set in the virHostCPUGetOnlineBitmap might diverge significantly. This can e.g. be the case when disabling smt via /sys/devices/system/cpu/smt/control. On the host this looks like: ``` $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/present 0-255 $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/online 0-127 ``` However in this case virBitmapToData previously only allocated 16 bytes for the output bitmap. This is becase the last set bit is on the 15th byte. Users of virHostCPUGetMap however rely on the "cpumap" containing enough space for all existing cpus (so they would expect 32 bytes in this case). E.g. cmdNodeCpuMap relies on this for its output. It will then actually read 32 bytes from the start of the "cpumap" address where in this case the last 16 of these bytes are uninitialized. This manifests itself in flapping outputs of "virsh nodecpumap --pretty" like: ``` $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,202 $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,197 $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,196-197 ``` This in turn potentially causes users of this data to report wrong cpu counts. Note that this only seems to happen with at least 256 physical cpus where at least 128 are offline. We fix this by preallocating the expected bitmap size. The softmmu memory instrumentation test sees so many more accesses than a normal translated host and its really not worth fixing up. Lets deprecate this odd configuration and save on the CI cycles. Hello, I have a use case for live-migration where the socket of the destination libvirtd is proxied by an mTLS WebSocket proxy. Since there is no WebSocket support in Libvirt, I've decided to use the existing ext transport and point it to a proxy binary on the source host of live-migration. While doing that, I've discovered a couple of roadblocks: 1. There is no way of passing cmdline arguments to the ext program 2. Live-migrations using ext transport fail localhost checks This short series addresses those limitations. This option for tap and vhost-user netdevs doesn't make sense since long ago (10 years!), starting from commits: 1e7398a140f7a6 ("vhost: enable vhost without without MSI-X") 24f938a682d934 ("vhost user:support vhost user nic for non msi guests") Prior these commits, to enable kernel vhost-net, or vhost-user-net for some specific kind of guests (that don't have MSI-X support), you should have set vhostforce=on. Now guest type doesn't matter, all guests are equal for these options logic. For tap the current logic is: vhost=on / vhost=off : vhostforce ignored, doesn't make sense vhost unset : vhostforce counts, enabling vhost So you may enable vhost for tap several ways: - vhost=on - vhostforce=on - vhost=on + vhostforce=on - and even vhost=on + vhostforce=off - they are all equal. For vhost-user we simply ignore the vhostforce option at all in the code. Let's finally deprecate the extra options. Also, fix @vhostforce documentation everywhere to show the real picture, and update vhost-user test to not use deprecated option. While updating command line options, drop "experimental" word from "experimental in kernel accelerator". vhost-net is in production for years. The '-I' flag for enabling IOAPIC was deprecated long ago in bhyve: https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/commit/?id=a1a4cbea587a6e201e07dc121268f3e559e… And IOAPIC is provided unconditionally since then. Currently, only vendor/product and bus/device matching are supported for USB host devices. Neither of these provide a stable and persistent way of assigning a guest a specific host device. Vendor/product can be ambiguous. Device numbers change on every enumeration. This patch adds a bus/port matching, which allows a specific port on the host to be specified using the dotted notation found in Linux's "devpath" sysfs attribute. [PATCH v4 0/6] cover: RFE libvirt secret encryption on disk

Libvirt secrets are stored unencrypted on the disk. With this series we want to start encrypting the secrets. 1. Introduce the GnuTLS decryption wrapper functions that work exact opposite to the encryption wrappers. 2. Add a new service called virt-secrets-init-encryption, that is linked to the virtsecretd service. virtsecretd service only starts after the new service generates a random encryption key. 3. Add a new secrets.conf configuration file that helps user to set a. secrets_encryption_key - allows the user to specify the encryption key file path, in case the default key is not to be used. b. encrypt_data - set to 0 or 1. If set to 1, then the newly added secrets will be encrypted. 4. Add encryption scheme or cipher attribute that will allow us to choose the last used cipher. 5. Once we have the encryption key, and a reliable way to tell the daemon what encryption scheme the secret object is using, we can encrypt the secrets on disk and store them in <uuid>.<encryption_scheme> format. It is important to note that if the encryption key is changed between restarts, then the respective secret will not be loaded by the driver. 6. Add documentation. Hi, While analysing traffic generated by "virsh vol-download", I noticed that the download stream exhibits the following pattern (over qemu+ssh://): <Start> Read 4 bytes (= frame length field) Read 262144 bytes (= header + payload ; VIR_NET_MESSAGE_HEADER_MAX (24) + VIR_NET_MESSAGE_LEGACY_PAYLOAD_MAX (262120)) Read 4 bytes (= frame length field) Read 48 bytes (= header + payload) <Go back to Start> While nothing seems to be actually wrong with this pattern, the average payload on large data transfers is only (262120+24)/2 == 131072 and the CPU makes double the iterations necessary. I'll be trying to figure out where this comes from, but I imagine that will be pretty hard to track down. Two questions: 1. Do you see the same thing? 2. Any ideas/hints where I could start looking? [PATCH] build: add detection of xdrproc_t arguments count

According to 9fa3a8ab6fd82ad2f5a14b490696085061418718, macOS insists on passing 3 arguments for xdrproc_t. Passing 3 arguments was a good common ground, but since recently[1] FreeBSD only accepts 2 arguments. Hi, Per Daniel's review feedback, this v4 series is based on Alistair's riscv-to-apply.next branch [3]. It depends on patches 1-5 of Max Chou's "Add Zvfbfa extension support" v2 series (not included; apply them first) [2]. It is based on RISC-V Debug Specification 1.0 [1]. It introduces the sdext/sdtrig config bits, DCSR/DPC/DSCRATCH state, Debug Mode enter/leave helpers, DRET, EBREAK entry, single-step, and trigger action=debug mode. To reduce review load, this series focuses on the Sdext features first. The Debug Module (DM) and related flows will follow in a later series. Changes in v4: - Fixed linux-user build errors: moved debug_mode/dcsr/dpc/dscratch fields inside #ifndef CONFIG_USER_ONLY block in cpu.h, and wrapped all code using these fields with proper guards. (Daniel) - Updated dependency from single patch (patch 5 only) to patches 1-5 of Max Chou's "Add Zvfbfa extension support" v2 series to avoid compilation errors.
