[libvirt] [PATCH 00/23] Fix host-model if the chosen CPU model has more features in QEMU compared to our cpu_map.xml
by Jiri Denemark 15 Oct '26

15 Oct '26

When decoding CPUID data to virCPUDef we need to be careful about using a CPU model which cannot be directly used on the current host. Normally, libvirt would notice the features which prevent the model from being usable and it would disable them in the computed virCPUDef, but this won't work in case the definition of the CPU model in QEMU contains more features than what we have in cpu_map.xml. We need to count with the usability blockers we got from QEMU and explicitly disable all of them to make the computed virCPUDef usable. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1464832 Jiri Denemark (23): util: Introduce virStringListCopy conf: Add usability blockers to virDomainCapsCPUModel qemu: Store CPU usability blockers in caps cache qemu: Parse unavailable features for CPU models cpu: Use virDomainCapsCPUModelsPtr in cpu driver APIs cpu: Drop unused parameter from cpuDecode cpu: Return model from virCPUModelIsAllowed cpu_x86: Move x86FeatureFind* to avoid forward prototypes cpu_x86: Disable blockers from unusable CPU models cputest: Replace json bool with enum cputest: Avoid calling json_reformat in cpu-parse.sh cputest: Print correct feature in virCPUUpdateLive test cputest: Test CPU usability blockers cputest: Separate QEMUCaps creation from cpuTestCPUIDJson build: Export virCPUModelIsAllowed private API cputest: Use CPU models from QEMU when available cputest: Add query-cpu-definitions reply for Core-i5-2540M cputest: Add CPUID data for Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E7-4830 cputest: Add query-cpu-definitions reply for Xeon-E7-4830 cputest: Update Xeon-E3-1245 data cputest: Add query-cpu-definitions reply for Xeon-E3-1245 cputest: Update Core-i7-2600 data cputest: Make a crippled version of Core-i7-2600 src/conf/domain_capabilities.c | 30 +- src/conf/domain_capabilities.h | 7 +- src/cpu/cpu.c | 95 +- src/cpu/cpu.h | 31 +- src/cpu/cpu_arm.c | 3 +- src/cpu/cpu_ppc64.c | 14 +- src/cpu/cpu_x86.c | 108 +- src/libvirt_private.syms | 1 + src/libxl/libxl_capabilities.c | 2 +- src/libxl/libxl_driver.c | 2 +- src/qemu/qemu_capabilities.c | 123 +-- src/qemu/qemu_capabilities.h | 6 +- src/qemu/qemu_capspriv.h | 5 + src/qemu/qemu_driver.c | 2 +- src/qemu/qemu_monitor.c | 2 + src/qemu/qemu_monitor.h | 1 + src/qemu/qemu_monitor_json.c | 26 +- src/qemu/qemu_process.c | 9 +- src/test/test_driver.c | 2 +- src/util/virstring.c | 37 + src/util/virstring.h | 3 + tests/cputest.c | 324 ++++-- tests/cputestdata/cpu-cpuid.py | 26 +- tests/cputestdata/cpu-gather.sh | 1 + tests/cputestdata/cpu-parse.sh | 2 +- tests/cputestdata/cpu-reformat.py | 9 + tests/cputestdata/x86_64-cpuid-Core-i5-2540M.json | 362 +++++++ .../x86_64-cpuid-Core-i7-2600-disabled.xml | 1 - You mean that the original overlay images remained on disk? e.g. /path/to/originalimage.snap1 ? > **Questions:** > - Is the observed automatic merge of the overlay file into the base image during `snapshot-delete` the intended behavior for external snapshots in recent libvirt versions? Or we need separate `blockcommit` step. Yes it is intended, because deleting a snapshot is effectively meaning "I don't want to return to this point any more" so the extra overlay makes no sense. > - Should the snapshot file be deleted automatically, or is manual cleanup required? If you mean the overlay, then yes it should have been deleted. > - Is there any official documentation that clarifies this behavior for external snapshots, as most documentation seems to focus on internal snapshots? The semantics of external and internal snapshots are supposed to be indentical. I don't think we document to a deep extent the actual behaviour WRT to the disk files.

[PATCH v2] virhostcpu: Fix potential use of unallocated memory
by Felix Huettner 26 Mar '26

26 Mar '26

In case of a host that has a large number of cpus offline the count of host cpus and the last bit set in the virHostCPUGetOnlineBitmap might diverge significantly. This can e.g. be the case when disabling smt via /sys/devices/system/cpu/smt/control. On the host this looks like: ``` $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/present 0-255 $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/online 0-127 ``` However in this case virBitmapToData previously only allocated 16 bytes for the output bitmap. This is becase the last set bit is on the 15th byte. Users of virHostCPUGetMap however rely on the "cpumap" containing enough space for all existing cpus (so they would expect 32 bytes in this case). E.g. cmdNodeCpuMap relies on this for its output. It will then actually read 32 bytes from the start of the "cpumap" address where in this case the last 16 of these bytes are uninitialized. This manifests itself in flapping outputs of "virsh nodecpumap --pretty" like: ``` $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,202 $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,197 $ virsh nodecpumap --pretty CPUs present: 256 CPUs online: 128 CPU map: 0-127,192,194,196-197 ``` This in turn potentially causes users of this data to report wrong cpu counts. Note that this only seems to happen with at least 256 physical cpus where at least 128 are offline. We fix this by preallocating the expected bitmap size. [PATCH v3 0/7] USB hostdev: allow addressing by port
by Maximilian Martin 11 Feb '26

11 Feb '26

Currently, only vendor/product and bus/device matching are supported for USB host devices. Neither of these provide a stable and persistent way of assigning a guest a specific host device. Vendor/product can be ambiguous. Device numbers change on every enumeration. This patch adds a bus/port matching, which allows a specific port on the host to be specified using the dotted notation found in Linux's "devpath" sysfs attribute. The path series is based on the previous work of Thomas Hebb: https://lists.libvirt.org/archives/list/devel@lists.libvirt.org/message/7U3… This resubmission includes Daniel's patch which extends the USB hostdev test logic. [PATCH v4 00/23] LIBVIRT: X86: TDX support
by Zhenzhong Duan 07 Jan '26

07 Jan '26

Hi, This series brings libvirt the x86 TDX support. * What's TDX? TDX stands for Trust Domain Extensions which isolates VMs from the virtual-machine manager (VMM)/hypervisor and any other software on the platform. This patchset extends libvirt to support TDX, with which one can start a TDX guest from high level rather than running qemu directly. * Misc As QEMU use a software emulated way to reset guest which isn't supported by TDX guest for security reason. We simulate reboot for TDX guest by kill and create a new one in FakeReboot framework. Complete code can be found at [1]. * Test Tested with upstream qemu v10.0.0-1724-gf9a3def17b shutdown/reboot/reset with virsh shutdown/reboot trigger in guest shutdown with on_poweroff=destroy/restart reboot with on_reboot=destroy/restart GUEST_PANICKED event processing auto firmware matching * Patch organization - [ PATCH vf-token 0/8] Introduce vf-token when using userspace PF
by Vivek Kashyap 23 Dec '25

23 Dec '25

The VFIO PCI ABI has been extended to require userspace PF driver to set a VF token to a known value. The VF drivers are then required to provide this token to access the VF device. The vf-token is set by the PF driver before VF drivers can access the device. The kernel provides no means to retrieve the token in use; but there is no specification describing the distribution or level of confidentiality of the token. Qemu has been extended to require the vf-token when vf device is used. An important point to note is that the vf-token is required only when both the PF and VF are used in userspace. This patch series adds support to provide the vf-token (uuid format) in the domain XML and to generate the qemu commandline including the vf-token. To support vf-token the new element will be used as follows: <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'> <driver name='vfio'/> <source> <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x0' slot='0x00' function='0x1'> <vf-token uuid='00112233-4455-6677-8899-aabbccddeeff'/> </address> </source> <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x01' function='0x0'/> </hostdev> The generated commandline will include the following: -device {"driver":"vfio-pci","host":"0000:00:0.1", "vf-token":"00112233-4455-6677-8899-aabbccddeeff", "id":"hostdev0","bus":"pci.0","addr":"0x1"} Changes since initial RFC based on review comments received: 1. Added documentation 2. Added test cases and ran successful test suite after each patch commit 3. fixed spaces, coding sytle, and uuid string format 4. Used S:vftoken in virJSONValueObjectAdd instead of a conditional Vivek Kashyap (8): Define the vf-token extension for PCI device Introduce the vf-token qemu capability This patch introduces the PCI address extension flag for vf-token This patch introduces new XML parser/formatter functions for parsing the vf-token Introduce a validation function for vf-token support in qemu and generate vf-token device attribute in qemu command line Provide information about the vf-token flag Add tests for the vf-token flag to the qemuxml2argv and qemuxml2xml test suites Update news about vf-token NEWS.rst | 8 +++ docs/formatdomain.rst | 3 ++ src/conf/device_conf.c | 49 ++++++++++++++++--- src/conf/domain_addr.h | 1 + src/conf/domain_conf.c | 8 +++ src/conf/schemas/basictypes.rng | 7 +++ src/libvirt_private.syms | 1 + src/qemu/qemu_capabilities.c | 3 ++ src/qemu/qemu_capabilities.h | 1 + src/qemu/qemu_command.c | 8 +++ src/qemu/qemu_domain_address.c | 3 ++ src/qemu/qemu_validate.c | 20 ++++++++ src/util/virpci.c | 7 +++ src/util/virpci.h | 10 ++++ .../qemucapabilitiesdata/caps_8.1.0_s390x.xml | 1 + .../caps_8.1.0_x86_64.xml | 1 + .../caps_8.2.0_x86_64.xml | 1 + .../hostdev-vfio-vf-token.x86_64-latest.args | 34 +++++++++++++ .../hostdev-vfio-vf-token.xml | 22 +++++++++ tests/qemuxml2argvtest.c | 1 + .../hostdev-vfio-vf-token.x86_64-latest.xml | 40 +++++++++++++++ tests/qemuxml2xmltest.c | 1 + 22 files changed, 223 insertions(+), 7 deletions(-) create mode 100644 tests/qemuxml2argvdata/hostdev-vfio-vf-token.x86_64-latest.args create mode 100644 tests/qemuxml2argvdata/hostdev-vfio-vf-token.xml create mode 100644 tests/qemuxml2xmloutdata/hostdev-vfio-vf-token.x86_64-latest.xml -- 2.33.8

[PATCH 0/1] cpu_map: fix vmx-* features wrong bitmaps
by Hector Cao 12 Nov '25

12 Nov '25

Hello, I'm unable to make virsh capabilities to detect the right CPU model on an Intel Granite Rapids platform. I would expect the get the CPU model defined in one of the src/cpu_map/x86_GraniteRapids*.xml files. The cause of the wrong detection is the fact that some vmx-* are not correctly detected and considered missing on this platform. When I take a look at the src/cpu_map/x86_features.xml file, I think that some of the vmx-* are wrongly defined. Taking as an example the vmx-apicv-xapic feature, it is defined as the first bit in the EAX register when we read the MSR 0x0000048b . But in Intel specification, this feature is represented as the first bit in the EDX register (32 higher bits). You can find in this submission the patch that fixes this issue, and this for all the affected MSRs. I tested this fix on my Granite Rapids platform and the CPU model is now correctly detected. [PATCH v3 0/8] Enable mshv support for Qemu domains
by Praveen K Paladugu 17 Oct '25

17 Oct '25

"[PATCH v3 00/26] Implementing a MSHV (Microsoft Hypervisor) accelerator" patchset in qemu-devel mailing list introduces MSHV support within Qemu. With above patchset, Qemu guests can be started with `-accel mshv` option to use Microsoft Hypervisor (/dev/mshv) as the hypervisor. Retaining Libvirt's naming convention, this translates to `hyperv` domains. Below is an excerpt of the xml to use with this patchset: ``` <domain type='hyperv'> <name>qemu_msh_testv</name> <cpu mode='host-model'/> <os> <type machine='q35'>hvm</type> </os> ... ``` This patch set introduces the necessary changes within libvirt to support Qemu guest with hyperv (mshv) hypervisor. Chages in v3: - Addressed review comments on v2. - fixed qemucapabilitiestest case - Added a case to qemuxmlconftest Changes in v2: - Addressed review comments on v1. - Added a test to verify mshv capabilities.
