Okay, after additional explanation on IRC (necessary due to my sub-wizard status wrt gmake and autotools), I know understand all the changes and it all looks proper to me.
I updated the commit message based on that IRC conversation, hopefully to make it a bit clearer. But don't feel bad about having sub-wizard status with autotools; it's already unfair that I'm the autoconf maintainer and know this stuff a bit better than average :)
