Aargh. This fails VPATH builds. I'm working on a fix. It also fails
with WITH_REMOTE is false - once we generate files, they must live in
$(srcdir), and the rules to generate them must be unconditionally
available for make dist to work.
Good thing we're at the beginning of a release cycle, to have time to
clear this all up. It may be Monday before I get to it.
