sysconfig files are owned by the admin of the host. They have the liberty to put anything they want into these files. This makes it difficult to provide different built-in defaults. Remove the sysconfig file and place the current desired default into the service file. Local customizations can now go either into /etc/sysconfig/name or /etc/systemd/system/name.service.d/my-knobs.conf Attempt to handle upgrades in libvirt.spec. Dirty files which are marked as %config will be renamed to file.rpmsave. To restore them automatically, move stale .rpmsave files away, and catch any new rpmsave files in %posttrans. This sounds very good in theory, but in practice we had some sort of documentation in a place where the admin could reasonably be expected to see it, and with your change we're now asking them to go poke inside a script to find that same information, with no clear indication that doing so is necessary. I believe that's a significant downgrade in user experience which is not justified by the desire to have a perfect separation between configuration files and documentation. Apologies for going on and on about this, but does the "5+ years" figure imply that further development work is necessary, or is the code needed to make setting these in the service file obsolete already in libvirt? This version fixes the lint error noted by Daniel and all CI tests now pass https://gitlab.com/jfehlig/libvirt/-/pipelines/434480400 With that Reviewed-by: Jim Fehlig <jfehlig@suse.com> but I'll still wait for a nod of approval from a representative of at least one other distro before pushing :-).
