Good catch. I've tweaked the commit message slightly and pushed this as well as the second patch. While doing so, I unfortunately failed to pick up Ani Sinha's R-b. Apologies for that! I'll need to spend a bit more time on the next patch. -- Andrea Bolognani / Red Hat / Virtualization

sysconfig files are owned by the admin of the host. They have the liberty to put anything they want into these files. This makes it difficult to provide different built-in defaults. Remove the sysconfig file and place the current desired default into the service file. Local customizations can now go either into /etc/sysconfig/name or /etc/systemd/system/name.service.d/my-knobs.conf Attempt to handle upgrades in libvirt.spec. Dirty files which are marked as %config will be renamed to file.rpmsave. To restore them automatically, move stale .rpmsave files away, and catch any new rpmsave files in %posttrans. libvirt-guests is undocumented. The file type is easy to guess, based on the filename in libvirt-guests.service. The Documentation= setting in this file is wrong, libvirtd(8) says nothing about this functionality. Initial documentation has to be provided as a separate change, by creating a new docs/whatever.rst. Olaf

The fact that we still QEMU_AUDIO_DRV and SDL_AUDIODRIVER in the service file even after your changes goes against this principle. But I don't necessarily disagree, given that --listen is documented both in the manual page for libvirtd and elsewhere.

This sounds very good in theory, but in practice we had some sort of documentation in a place where the admin could reasonably be expected to see it, and with your change we're now asking them to go poke inside a script to find that same information, with no clear indication that doing so is necessary. I believe that's a significant downgrade in user experience which is not justified by the desire to have a perfect separation between configuration files and documentation. Please either adopt the mitigation I suggested in my previous message (add a short note to the service file and make sure configuration variables are documented near the very top of the script) or introduce proper documentation for libvirt-guests before making the one we currently have much harder to locate. -- Andrea Bolognani / Red Hat / Virtualization

These variables are probably stale. But, I just looked briefly at the code and could not figure out within minutes what the purpose was. Perhaps I will remove them as well in case a v8 is required. Olaf

So what should be done about these? I think whoever added support for these environment variables a couple of decades ago failed to provide proper documentation. Or perhaps whoever wrote the "sound" section of formatdomain.html.in failed to recognize the existence of these environment variables. So in the end I will now sit down and write some blurb into the sound section of formatdomain.rst, just to get this series off the table... Olaf

I don't think we need todo anything differentl - Olaf's patches are fine in this respect already IMHO. Apologies for going on and on about this, but does the "5+ years" figure imply that further development work is necessary, or is the code needed to make setting these in the service file obsolete already in libvirt? Because if the latter I think we can simply drop the comments today: anyone who was setting them in the past can still set them even if we don't provide examples, and anyone who was not already using them is probably going to be better off if we don't advertise the old way of doing things. -- Andrea Bolognani / Red Hat / Virtualization

This version fixes the lint error noted by Daniel and all CI tests now pass https://gitlab.com/jfehlig/libvirt/-/pipelines/434480400 With that Reviewed-by: Jim Fehlig <jfehlig@suse.com> but I'll still wait for a nod of approval from a representative of at least one other distro before pushing :-). Also, no need for V7 only to fix my NEWS nits in 4/4. If in agreement, I can make the change before pushing. Jim
