Technically the VIF also changes, and what I see if I completely reuse the
config, it automatically gets a <bootloader /> (I think it changes to hvm)

You are right thats why it uses script in VIF to manage it. Yes you can use complete config.
I really didn't understand your concern about <bootloader/> can you elaborate little more
