Lines in the news files correspond to commit summaries, since they are commited forever into git I don't think we should change them so that they can't be looked up.

No, all the translation files are fetched from the translation service so I think they'd be overwritten anyways once the translations are synced the next time. You should make these changes in the zanata translation service IIRC.
