This is more common than you would think primarily as a way to override options that libvirt has set either via the qemu extra args tag or a script wrapper of qemu.
"-set" could first delete a pre-existing option. We could also extend "-set" to accept multiple values (like -set device.foo.bar=baz,device.foo.qux=quux), which is useful also to set a list option. Paolo
