One general note for all the patches: NEWS.rst is updated as a whole
at the end, as separate commit. This eases cherry-picking, removes
dependencies between patches that would not conflict otherwise, and
avoids churn in each patch.
Ironically, the last thing I did prior to submitting this to the
mailing list was to split the NEWS.rst updates up and merge them with
the commits that introduced the changes. :)
Since the NEWS.rst update should be its own separate separate commit,
I’ll be sending a v2 version of this whole patch set.
