If installing manually, configure will default to putting it in /usr/local
unless you give a different --prefix option.
Python only looks in /usr by default, so when installing custom builds
you'll need to set
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib
export PYTHONPATH=/usr/local/lib/python2.4/site-packages
