That's the difference between our setups. I used the git tag instead of
the tarball. If things work with the tarball generated on a Linux box then
I guess that's fine by me.
Yes, we only officially support creation of tar.gz archives on modern
Linux platforms. The reason we saw this difference is that the RPC
generated .c & .h files are included in the tar.gz, so builds from
tar.gz don't use the broken OS-X rpcgen tool
